As a long-time fan of Dragon Ball, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia as I eagerly await the premiere of Dragon Ball Daima this Fall. Having grown up with Goku and his friends, it’s fascinating to see how the franchise continues to evolve while maintaining its roots.
The much-anticipated return of “Dragon Ball Daima” is set for this Fall, and it appears that the upcoming anime shares similarities with “Dragon Ball GT.” As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s original manga, which first graced the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, a fresh anime series is being unveiled. This new offering promises an untold story not previously seen in any “Dragon Ball” manga or anime adaptations. However, despite the novelty of its narrative, certain elements will retain a hint of familiarity.
In the upcoming series titled “Dragon Ball Daima,” Goku embarks on a journey to the Demon Realm alongside the Z Fighters and their families, who have been shrunk to miniature sizes. Unlike previous adventures in “Dragon Ball Z,” this new storyline takes place outside of those events and shares some resemblance with “Dragon Ball GT.” However, it’s crucial to note that “Dragon Ball Daima” is an integral part of the Dragon Ball universe, and its outcome could influence future installments in the series.
How Dragon Ball Daima Is Like Dragon Ball GT
The most striking similarity between the two series is undeniably the transformation of Goku into a miniature version. In Dragon Ball Daima, promotional materials have revealed that he will adopt a “Mini” form. This transformation bears a strong resemblance to Dragon Ball GT, where Goku was transformed back into a child after a wish made on new Dragon Balls. It’s quite evident that the central hook in this series might be the same, as demonic villains use the Dragon Balls (possibly a new set of blue ones) to induce this transformation on Goku. Visually, it’s challenging not to draw comparisons between the two transformations.
In a nutshell, the two storylines are interconnected primarily through their central plot devices. By suggesting that Goku embarks on another “Grand Adventure,” similar to the “Grand Tour” from the previous series, Goku Mini will join forces with Mini Supreme Kai and venture into uncharted territories to uncover the mystery behind their transformations. Along the way, they’ll encounter various new allies and may even track down a fresh set of Dragon Balls that seem to be at the heart of these problems. However, there’s a significant twist that sets this series apart from its predecessor.
Dragon Ball Daima Is Canon
Akira Toriyama played a role in designing some characters for Dragon Ball GT, but he didn’t contribute to its storyline directly. Instead, Toei Animation produced Dragon Ball GT as a sequel to Dragon Ball Z following the original series. Although it incorporated elements from Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga, it had its unique plot and episodes. For quite some time, Dragon Ball GT was the only Dragon Ball anime released after Dragon Ball Z.
This time around, there are some notable differences! Although Toriyama may not be present to witness the team’s outcomes, “Daima” has been meticulously crafted by him. Moreover, it appears that this story takes place after Dragon Ball Z, serving to bridge the gap between those events and Dragon Ball Super. In a sense, it mirrors GT, and Dragon Ball Daima might be Toriyama’s method of incorporating some of its superior aspects into the official canon, similar to what we saw with productions like Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
How The Two Will Be Different
It’s worth noting that while the two anime share many external similarities, they also incorporate aspects of the “Super Dragon Ball Heroes” series. The Demon Realm, though not entirely novel in the context of “Dragon Ball”, has been extensively explored in the arcade game, featuring a plethora of demonic adversaries that Goku and his companions have encountered throughout the game’s history. As such, it’s reasonable to expect that some of these compelling elements will be integrated into “Dragon Ball Daima” as well.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that while Dragon Ball Daima and Dragon Ball GT appear similar at this stage, there’s an intriguing possibility that their narratives will evolve significantly as more of the series unfolds. It’s exciting to imagine how elements from GT, like Super Saiyan 4, the Dark Dragons, and other captivating concepts, might be seamlessly integrated into Daima’s storyline, enriching it further. After all, GT wasn’t entirely devoid of innovative ideas; it was perhaps its slow start that initially left fans underwhelmed.
Remarkably, there seems to be a repetition of the past with “Dragon Ball Daima” as well. While many fans anticipated the return of “Dragon Ball Super”, or an animation adapting the manga content since the series ended, we’re instead receiving “Dragon Ball Daima”. This new series features a miniature Goku, which has left some fans feeling apprehensive even from promotional materials. It’s intriguing to witness the past transform into the present again, and we’ll observe how “Dragon Ball Daima” unfolds when it premieres in Japan on October 11th.
