As a seasoned gamer and die-hard Dragon Ball fan who has grown up with this iconic series, I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s groundbreaking manga. The upcoming art exhibition in Japan is going to be a dream come true for fans like me, and seeing Masanori Morita’s unique take on Volume 24 is just the cherry on top!
In October, we’ll be commemorating the 40th anniversary of “Dragon Ball” manga, published by Shueisha, with a series of exciting events starting this Fall. One such event includes a fresh interpretation of one of Akira Toriyama’s original volume covers, created by Masanori Morita, the genius behind Rookies. Akira Toriyama first introduced “Dragon Ball” to the pages of Shueisha’s “Weekly Shonen Jump” magazine back in 1984, and over the decades, it has grown into a massive franchise. To honor this significant milestone, Shueisha is planning a variety of engaging projects, exhibitions, and more to make the celebration unforgettable.
Later this Fall, there’s a unique art exhibition scheduled in Japan for Dragon Ball fans. This event will showcase the diverse styles of 42 volume covers, each created by different artists from Shonen Jump. Notable creators such as Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), Yuki Tabata (Black Clover), Sui Ishida (Tokyo Ghoul), and many others have contributed to this collection previously. The latest addition to the series is a fresh interpretation of Dragon Ball Volume 24, crafted by Masanori Morita, who has worked on projects like Rookies and Rokudenashi Blues. Here’s a sneak peek:
DRAGON BALL Volume 24: Rookies’ Rokudenashi Blues – a special edition in the DRAGON BALL Super Gallery Project to celebrate 40 years of the series. Each month, a different manga artist is given the task of redesigning one of the 42 cover artworks until November 2024.

What’s Next for Dragon Ball’s 40th Anniversary?
The 40th anniversary of the Dragon Ball franchise won’t just include this one event, as a fresh anime series titled Dragon Ball Daima is set to make its debut on screens later this Fall. However, an exact release date hasn’t been finalized yet at the time of this article. Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, has played a significant role in shaping the original story and character designs for Dragon Ball Daima alongside Yoshitaka Yashima and Aya Komaki. The series is being directed by Toei Animation, with Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru adapting Toriyama’s designs for animation, and Yuuko Kakihara overseeing the writing of the scripts.
Masako Nozawa is set to reprise her role as Kid Goku in the anime, marking her as the sole cast member confirmed for “Dragon Ball Grand Mission” thus far. Previously, manga creator Akira Toriyama hinted at the original plot for this series before his passing: “A secret conspiracy causes Goku and his friends to shrink. To rectify the situation, they’ll embark on a grand journey to an uncharted, enigmatic world. This adventure promises intense action in a strange and mysterious land. Since Goku must compensate for his small size, he employs his Power Pole in combat, a technique not used in quite some time.”
