As a gamer with over three decades of manga and anime under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest Dragon Ball 40th anniversary celebration has been nothing short of spectacular! The collaboration between Shueisha and its esteemed artists to reimagine the iconic covers is an absolute treat for long-time fans like myself.
As a dedicated Dragon Ball fan, I’m thrilled to share that one of Shueisha’s renowned Weekly Shonen Jump artists has given our beloved series a fresh, stylish update! This October marks an impressive 40 years since the debut of Akira Toriyama’s groundbreaking Dragon Ball manga within the hallowed pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Over the years, this franchise has exploded in size and scope with countless manga, anime, movies, video games, and more. It’s not just a series; it’s an influence that has shaped the work of many other manga creators, both those who worked alongside Toriyama and those who followed in his footsteps. Now, we’re gathering to celebrate this incredible legacy!
For the 40th anniversary celebration of “Dragon Ball”, Shueisha is pulling out all the stops and preparing for a special exhibition in Japan. They’ve been working on this project for several years, and have enlisted famous manga creators like Gege Akutami from “Jujutsu Kaisen” and Kohei Horikoshi from “My Hero Academia” to create unique makeovers of the series’ 42 volume covers. The latest unveiling is for the cover art of Volume 1, which has been beautifully designed by Masakazu Katsura, renowned for his work on “Wing-Man”, “Zetman”, and “Video Girl Ai”. Take a look at it below as reported by @WSJ_manga.

Who Is Masakazu Katsura?
Masakazu Katsura was one of Shueisha’s prominent creators during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He initially gained recognition in Weekly Shonen Jump with his full-fledged superhero series, “Wing-Man,” which is now being adapted into a live-action series four decades after its manga ended. Following this success, he went on to create the dark hero series, Zetman, that remains his most popular work outside of Japan. Later, he ventured into something entirely different with “Video Girl Ai.
It’s clear that Katsura’s weekly work with Shueisha’s magazines has been on hiatus for some time. The fact that they’re bringing the creator back for a new makeover in celebration of Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary exhibition underscores the significance of this event for Shueisha. Moreover, the abundance of new Dragon Ball content that fans have enjoyed this Fall and will continue to enjoy up until 2025 further highlights its importance.
What’s Next for Dragon Ball’s 40th Anniversary?
The much-anticipated transformation of “Dragon Ball” (for Volume 42) is set to arrive next month, wrapping up this monumental project that’s been unfolding gradually over the past two years. This final transformation will showcase fresh artwork by the legendary creator of “One Piece,” Eiichiro Oda, serving as a fitting finale for the endeavor. As of now, specific dates for its Japanese debut remain undisclosed, and unfortunately, global fans can only look forward to experiencing it remotely since Shueisha has yet to announce any worldwide release plans.
For fans worldwide, an ideal method to honor Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary is by tuning into the fresh anime titled Dragon Ball Daima. This series showcases the final original narrative and character designs from the late creator Akira Toriyama, taking viewers on a new journey with Goku through the Demon Realm. Each episode offers exciting glimpses into the franchise’s history, making it an essential step forward for Dragon Ball and a heartfelt celebration of this cherished milestone.
