Dragon Ball Just Gave Gohan a Shocking New Form

As a seasoned Dragon Ball fan with over two decades of following this legendary series, I must say that the latest addition to the franchise, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, has truly taken my breath away. The Episode Battle mode offers a fresh take on the characters we’ve grown to love, and the branching story paths are a delightful twist that keeps you on your toes.

Warning! Massive spoilers to follow for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero! Dragon Ball is now in the midst of celebrating its 40th anniversary, and with it comes the release of two massive projects offering new looks at the series. Not only are fans being treated with a brand new TV anime with the release of Dragon Ball Daima, but video game fans are being treated with the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. As the newest entry in the long dormant Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi franchise, Sparking! Zero does what its predecessors did and offers some special “What If?” stories for fans.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero features distinct storylines for each character participating in its Episode Battle mode, and as many fans anticipated, these stories can diverge based on the outcomes of your battles. Notably, Gohan’s storyline presents a substantial shift to his narrative within Dragon Ball Super. This new path introduces an entirely fresh form for him, transforming him into the antagonist of the Future Trunks saga rather than his usual role. Furthermore, as shown in a recent video from Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine and within the game itself, the villain of the Future Trunks saga can switch from Goku Black…to Gohan Black instead.

Who Is Gohan Black?

In Gohan’s episode “Battle for Resurrection F,” the course of events can dramatically change. If you manage to keep Frieza at bay, allowing Gohan to demonstrate his power (as shown around the six-minute mark in the video), he will have a chance to transform into his Ultimate Gohan form and vanquish Golden Frieza. Instead of being defeated by the villain as depicted in the original storyline, this scenario opens up an entirely new direction for Gohan’s story. He is then recognized as the strongest warrior in Universe 7, even facing off against Hit in the Tournament of Destroyers and gaining attention from across the multiverse.

In this account of events, Gohan is the one encountered by Future Trunks when he returns from his timeline. Upon encountering him, Trunks aggressively assaults Gohan, as there’s a new menace emerging in his own time. This antagonist turns out to be an evil incarnation of Gohan, called Gohan Black, as revealed around the ten-minute mark in the video above. In this scenario, it’s Gohan who accompanies Beerus to fight Zamasu and it’s Gohan who motivates the malevolent deity to instigate his Zero Mortals Plan.

Does Gohan Black Transform?

In the subsequent events of the story, Gohan Black assumes a role similar to Goku Black in the original narrative, but with a twist: Gohan now takes center stage in battles alongside Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks. Unlike his initial incarnation, Gohan Black’s power-up manifests as a pink-tinted aura that resembles Ultimate Gohan’s form, although it lacks a distinct name like Super Saiyan Rose, and does not alter his hair color. Instead, it gives Gohan a more intense appearance, similar to the transformation of Ultimate Gohan. Notably, this transformation alters Fused Zamasu in some way as well.

As a die-hard Dragon Ball fan, it’s mind-blowing to unveil that Gohan Black, much like Goku Black, is uncovered as a former Zamasu who seized control of Gohan’s body using the Super Dragon Balls. This malevolent takeover led to the tragic deaths of Videl and Pan. Merging with Zamasu, Fused Zamasu undergoes a final transformation, altering his hair style to resemble Gohan’s. Defeating this seemingly invincible antagonist proved challenging, but I teamed up with Piccolo to master the Evil Containment Wave. With Trunks by my side, we managed to subdue the deity for long enough to completely seal him away, saving Trunks’ timeline in the process.

This single transformation not only enhances Gohan’s importance, but also highlights his potential if he had persisted in physical training post the battle with Frieza. It alters the narrative significantly, leading to his ultimate victory in the Tournament of Power. However, this new villainous form represents the most substantial alteration in the canon to date.
