As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, I can confidently say that my childhood just got a whole lot more exciting! The visual upgrade in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, made possible by current-gen hardware, is nothing short of breathtaking. The environmental destruction, while overwhelming for the developers, has me eagerly anticipating the mayhem I’ll unleash.
This week is packed with exciting premieres, featuring several highly-anticipated games set to drop in the coming days. Among them is the reimagined version of “Silent Hill 2,” which has garnered much praise from critics, despite the heavy expectations placed on Bloober Team (not forgetting Konami, given its notable past).
Without a doubt, we shouldn’t overlook the Vessel of Hatred in Diablo 4, the initial paid expansion for the action RPG looter, that carries on the narrative, introduces the Spiritborn class, allows you to employ Mercenaries, and presents fresh end-game activities. To add to this excitement, Steel City Interactive’s Undisputed aims to fill the void left by EA Sports’ Fight Night series with more than 70 licensed fighters and numerous real-world championships to conquer.
Besides the upcoming titles this month like MechWarrior 5: Clans, Unknown 9: Awakening, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, there’s one game that has been receiving considerable buzz. It’s not just creating a stir on social media but also leading in pre-orders. This game is currently sitting at the top of Steam’s Best Sellers list, surpassing all the other well-known titles (and numerous others) it’s competing against.
Discussing Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO now. This title is the follow-up to Bandai Namco’s Budokai Tenkaichi series and the first console game in the franchise since 2007. The anticipation surrounding its release isn’t just making it one of the most highly anticipated games this year, but a game that every fan of the series – whether from the games, manga, or anime – should consider playing. Even if you’re new to the franchise, its appeal is undeniable.
Reflecting on my gaming past, I can’t help but reminisce about the legendary ‘Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3’. This game stood head and shoulders above its peers in the series, boasting an extensive character roster and a wealth of modes to keep us engaged. Remarkably, it managed this feat despite the relatively modest capabilities of the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii.
Personally, what makes this game stand out for me is its ability to truly embody the spirit of Dragon Ball. In a series like this, there’s an undeniable hierarchy of power, with occasional upsets, but each character is unique and cherished in their own right. It’s not just about creating a balanced world, but delivering an authentic Dragon Ball experience that resonates with fans. Instead of a straightforward power fantasy, it’s more like living the Dragon Ball fantasy itself. Compared to games like Dragon Ball FighterZ or Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – both excellent in their genres – Budokai Tenkaichi 3 really shines.
Experience the liberty to maneuver through stages, causing chaos, swiftly charging toward your adversary, hurling them into the surroundings, then instantly teleporting to their position for an impressive combo before unleashing a colossal energy blast – it’s all included. The excitement of exchanging energy blasts, as players attempt to overpower each other or transform during battle for a power boost similar to the series, was truly captivating to observe back then. Moreover, the gameplay is well-crafted and reactive, offering mechanics that are simple to grasp yet demand strategy to execute and master.
In “Sparking! ZERO”, developed by Spike Chunsoft, they aim not only to enhance what made the previous game exceptional but also to exceed expectations in replicating the captivating Dragon Ball experience. The cast boasts a whopping 182 characters, spanning every arc and even the movies. This includes multiple fusions and transformations, along with variations of characters from different stages of the series. Notably, the base Vegeta or Goku in this game hail from “Dragon Ball Super”. We’ll delve into why that matters shortly, but for now, this is the largest roster the series has seen to date.
In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the gameplay intricacies are fully realized, boosted by Spike Chunsoft leveraging contemporary hardware to enhance visuals. The stages, characters, and destructible environments have never looked better. The level of destruction was so intense that it required compromises in local split-screen mode, limiting it to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber as a playable stage. However, players can still enjoy the spectacle in both online multiplayer and single-player modes, finding solace in these alternative experiences.
In terms of single-player mode, Episode Battle has plenty to look forward to! It offers eight unique characters, allowing you to journey through each of their stories. This includes Goku progressing from the Raditz saga all the way to the Tournament of Power – an event that’s never been depicted in Dragon Ball fighting games before. Additionally, you can delve into the tales of Goku Black and Future Trunks, giving you the opportunity to live through that storyline for the first time, and experience its thrilling moments from various viewpoints.
It’s equally fascinating to consider the various outcomes stemming from different choices. For instance, what would happen if Vegeta had defeated Goku and his companions during the saga instead of narrowly escaping? What branches might unfold if Trunks were unable to defeat Goku Black and Zamasu? And should Jiren emerge victorious in the Tournament of Power, how might he impact all other universes? While these scenarios aren’t part of the official storyline, they remain intriguing possibilities.
Beyond the Episode Battle feature, Custom Battle serves as an enthralling novelty. It empowers players to arrange their ideal clashes that might otherwise be unattainable and meticulously design them, including dialogues, camera perspectives, and varying conclusions based on the outcome. The most captivating aspect is the ability to publish your inventions online for others to experience. Whether you’re after a tough battle, eager to experiment with diverse situations, or curious about their outcomes, Custom Battle has much to offer – and I can’t wait to see how Spike Chunsoft might expand this feature in the future.
Ultimately, there’s what is referred to as the Ranked Mode, which takes advantage of the fact that certain characters are significantly more powerful than others. By allocating different Destruction Points and limiting players to 15 points, this mode introduces valuable strategy in the process of assembling teams. If you select a character who can transform during combat, it allows for the inclusion of lower-point fighters, thereby increasing their battle power. This, in turn, provides more flexibility when constructing a larger team.
Absolutely, you can certainly take your opponent off guard from the start by using a transformation and fusion combo with your team members. This strategy offers a measure of balance while preserving each character’s unique identity (and ideally avoiding future adjustments that might weaken their power).
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO’s, even though we’re yet to fully grasp how its gameplay will compare to previous installments. However, the assurance comes from knowing that Spike Chunsoft is choosing not to tinker with what doesn’t need fixing. Instead, they’re venturing into new territories, while maintaining all the explosive destruction and exhilarating moments that encapsulate the true spirit of Dragon Ball.
The game titled “Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO” is set to release on October 11th, available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC platforms. For those who have pre-ordered the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition, early access begins on October 8th (or 7th, depending on your location). It might seem surprising that a new installment in the series could cause such anticipation, but it underscores the strong bond longtime fans share with the anime/manga.
