In a recent reveal of the 24th manga volume of Dragon Ball Super, artist Toyotaro disclosed some intriguing insights about the chapters assembled in this collection. One particularly noteworthy detail concerned one of the last conversations between Toyotaro and his mentor Toriyama, discussing their shared vision for one of the final stories they collaborated on. Though Toriyama is no longer with us, his lasting influence on the anime world will persist for years to come.
In the new Afterword for Dragon Ball Super Volume 24, Toyotaro explains that the Saiyamen X backstory added at the end of this volume is a manga adaptation with extra details, derived from a text written by Toriyama-sensei. As he was working on Saiyamen X as a prequel to the Super Hero arc, Sensei casually mentioned, “Feel free to decide whether or not this story gets incorporated into the main narrative.” Toyotaro felt it would be a shame to discard such an intriguing tale, so he chose to transform it into a comic.
After taking over from Akira, Toyotaro shared, “Given that the prequel for the ‘Super Hero’ arc was only three chapters long, I had to let go of my initial plan. However, I was given the opportunity to illustrate three chapters detailing events post Saiyamen X’s birth. As we wrapped up the ‘Super Hero’ arc, this story was one that needed to be told. I am grateful that my request was granted, enabling me to share it as a standalone piece. Thank you for reading. With this, the ‘Super Hero’ arc has officially come to an end!
What Comes Next For Dragon Ball?
At the moment this article was penned, no details have emerged about the resumption of the “Dragon Ball Super” manga. Although there’s a suggestion that it might carry on, we don’t know when fresh episodes will be out or if Toyotaro will continue to handle both writing and drawing duties in the future. With the conclusion of the Super Hero Arc, there are numerous paths the series could take next.
One intriguing aspect to delve into could be the Realm of Demons, expanded upon in the latest anime titled “Dragon Ball Daima“. In this side story set after “Dragon Ball Z“, Vegeta attained Super Saiyan 3 and Goku attained Super Saiyan 4, transformations that have not been displayed in “Dragon Ball Super” thus far. Furthermore, the formidable challenge of Frieza and his final form poses a significant threat, potentially setting up the most intense battle yet for the Z-Fighters.
