In chapter 104 of Dragon Ball Super, we’re offered a glimpse into Akira Toriyama’s vision of Earth’s heroes and saviors beyond the Z-Fighters. Contrary to what casual viewers might expect, it seems that the world-saving battles fought by Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and their comrades don’t automatically make them heroes in the public eye. Instead, we join Trunks as he explores a new museum filled with statues honoring Earth’s heroes. Along the way, readers discover fun Easter eggs hidden throughout the chapter.
It’s no surprise that fans are pondering, “If it’s not Goku, then who?” As Dragon Ball Super swiftly responds to this question, we are presented with statues of characters who have previously saved the world or aided the Z-Fighters in their battles. The first statue unveiled is that of Olibu, a character who has made appearances here and there during Dragon Ball Z’s original run and is said to have trained under King Kai. In the lore of humanity, Olibu is credited with numerous heroic deeds, making him somewhat akin to a legendary Greek hero in Akira Toriyama’s works. Furthermore, the obscure character exhibit doesn’t stop with just Olibu.
Dragon Ball Super Replaces Earth’s Mightiest Warriors With Obscure Past Heroes
As we delve further into the museum, a long panel showcases an array of statues representing various enigmatic figures, some even playfully designed. These figures stand upon pedestals, their masks or hints of martial arts past suggesting former heroes who displayed remarkable bravery, yet remain unnamed to us viewers. This single display suggests that the museum aims not only to honor renowned heroes but also those whose names have yet to be widely known.
Following the crowd of unidentified characters, we’re introduced to another familiar figure, Master Mutaito, who made appearances in Dragon Ball during Goku’s time travel through the Pendulum Room and a brief flashback from Dragon Ball Super. Similar to how he was portrayed, Master Mutaito is yet another tragic hero of Earth, responsible for sealing Demon King Piccolo and training Master Roshi. A conversation ensues questioning the wealth and fame of the statued heroes, but this notion is quickly dispelled as it’s revealed that many, such as Mutaito, sacrificed their lives to protect the Earth.
To any dedicated fan, the mention of wealth derived from heroism instantly conjures up a grand statue of the boisterous martial artist, Mr. Satan. The narrative then follows closely behind. Mr. Satan’s oversized statue is aesthetically appropriate for his brash persona and serves as a testament to who many believe vanquished Cell. This imposing statue, bathed in dramatic lighting, stands in stark contrast to the true extent of Mr. Satan’s role in saving the world and the obscurity of Goku and Gohan’s statues, respectively.
What About the Sayains?
Visitors, together with Trunks, are led towards two additional statues that stand as a testament to the fact that not every world savior will be recognized by their name. Among these is the statue of The Great Saiyaman, whose bravery and heroic identity have been forever etched in stone for deeds such as preventing robberies and similar acts. However, Gohan himself will not be celebrated by the populace for his immense acts of heroism like the defeat of Cell and Cell Max. Despite saving countless lives, more than they can comprehend, the Earth will continue to honor the masked hero instead of the man behind the mask.
In this statue from Dragon Ball, it’s none other than the main character Son Goku who is portrayed. However, there seems to be an oddity since the statue doesn’t have a name and instead has a question mark where Goku’s face should be. Though his appearance – with the traditional outfit, hair, and build – strongly resembles the legendary hero, most people might not recognize Goku by name or as a hero.
In the realm of Dragon Ball Super, chapter 104 felt more like a delightful exploration rather than a significant advancement in the storyline. It was a treat for longtime fans, as it subtly incorporated references and nods to the vast world created by Akira Toriyama. Even though the Z-Fighters seem to dwell in relative obscurity, this chapter managed to highlight some of them in this hall of heroes, albeit with their faces slightly sidelined from the main limelight.
