Dragon Ball Super’s Last Legacy: Tribute to Akira Toriyama

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share the heartwarming tribute that the artist behind “Dragon Ball Super” has paid to the late and legendary creator, Akira Toriyama, who passed away last year. In an emotional turn of events, this talented artist adapted one of Toriyama’s final stories he left behind, providing us with a touching farewell.

Currently, “Dragon Ball Super” is taking a break following Toriyama’s passing. However, before the hiatus set in, it made an unexpected comeback in Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine with a captivating one-shot story featuring Goten and Trunks. Inspired to become local superheroes, this story was actually one of Toriyama’s last remaining ideas.

The much-anticipated new installment of the Dragon Ball Super manga is now available in Japan, gathering the last chapters of the series for readers. This volume also contains a fresh one-shot tale featuring Goten and Trunks, which takes place prior to the prequel arc of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Interestingly, this story was originally conceived by Toriyama but hadn’t been officially adapted into the manga until now. As series artist Toyotaro mentioned in a special note accompanying the release, the idea originated from a thought that Toriyama had previously shared but hadn’t developed yet.

Dragon Ball Super Uses Akira Toriyama’s Final Story

In his message regarding Dragon Ball Super Volume 24, the artist revealed that the final illustration for ‘Saiyaman X’ was inspired by a story penned by Toriyama-sensei. He then reworked this tale and turned it into a comic strip. As he developed the backstory for ‘Saiyaman X’, which precedes the Super Hero arc, Toriyama provided him with an additional story as a prelude. Although Toriyama mentioned that its inclusion in the main narrative wasn’t crucial, the artist felt compelled to transform it into a manga, rather than discarding it.

Initially, I was only assigned three chapters for the special Super Hero prequel arc. Yet, despite the limited space, the story I had envisioned still lingered in my mind. Luckily, when the final volume approached, I was granted the opportunity to bring this unrealized idea to life. So, as the Super Hero arc concluded, I seized the chance to illustrate it as a standalone piece, and now, here it is!

What’s Next for Dragon Ball Super?

Observing here, I’ve just witnessed the culmination of the “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” arc in the latest release of the manga. This is a significant development as it hints at potential future stories yet to unfold, perhaps within months or even years down the line. Instead of implying that the Dragon Ball Super manga has reached its conclusion following this arc, it’s merely the current story arc that’s drawing to a close.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel excited when our beloved Dragon Ball Super artist hints at more content in the pipeline! However, the mystery thickens as we ponder over what this could possibly entail. Given that Akira Toriyama might not be directly involved in crafting the story anymore (similar to how the anime team embarked on their journey with Dragon Ball Daima), the future of Dragon Ball Super remains shrouded in uncertainty.
