Although Dragon Quest 12 might still be a ways off, there’s no need to wait long for more excitement from the series! To celebrate Dragon Quest Day, the anniversary of the original RPG’s release, we now have a confirmed launch date for the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. This eagerly awaited pair of titles will reintroduce the first two games of the renowned Japanese franchise with stunning modern 2D graphics on October 30th, 2025. They’ll be available globally on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Initially launched in Japan on May 27th, 1986, the inaugural Dragon Quest game paved the way for the series’ success due to its engaging RPG mechanics and the contribution of Akira Toriyama, renowned for creating Dragon Ball, as a character designer. Although it didn’t perform as well in the West, later games began gaining popularity, with Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King in 2005 being particularly successful. The most recent mainline title, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Dream, was released in 2017, while the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is still under development despite the sad demise of composer Koichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama.
Regarding the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, these two games, when combined, are set to appear after the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake in 2024 and serve as a conclusion to Erdrick’s saga. In terms of gameplay, players will find themselves controlling the descendants of Erdrick, the hero from the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The remakes offer improved HD-2D graphics, an enhanced battle system, numerous user-friendly updates, and significant narrative expansions. Additionally, both remakes will include new content, although specifics about this fresh material have yet to be disclosed.
At the game’s launch, you can purchase a collection containing all three games from the Erdrick Trilogy for $99.99. If you haven’t had a chance to play game III and are eager to immerse yourself in the entire series, this is an excellent opportunity. Given the glowing reviews the originals received and the positive response to III, which boasts an 84 on Metacritic, these titles are certainly worth checking out. As previously mentioned, the remastered version of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D will make its debut on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 30th, 2025.
