Dragon Quest 12 Update: Progress Slow, but Hopeful!

2021 saw the announcement of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, but since then, specifics about the game have been scarce for the past three years. However, during a recent live broadcast with his radio show group KosoKoso Hoso Kyoku, series creator and designer Yuji Horii provided a brief update on the project’s development. As reported by Automaton, Horii mentioned that the team is diligently working on the game and plans to share information gradually as progress unfolds. In other words, they intend to share bits of news periodically as they make advancements in the game’s development.

Although this update doesn’t provide detailed insights about Dragon Quest XII, it suggests that development is moving forward, though at a leisurely pace. Previously, we didn’t have many details regarding the game. Last year, creator Yuji Horii hinted on Twitter that he aims to create something worthy of the posthumous work of the two creators who passed away – Koichi Sugiyama (in 2021) and Akira Toriyama (in 2024). For many fans, the thought of a new Dragon Quest without its composer and character designer is nearly inconceivable. It will be intriguing to observe how the series adapts without their influence.

It appears that Dragon Quest XII is still quite a distance off, but fear not! Square Enix has stepped up to keep us entertained. Last year, they released the highly successful Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which surpassed their commercial expectations – something we don’t often hear from Square Enix these days. This is definitely a good sign. In 2025, we can look forward to another release: the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. A specific launch date for this has not been revealed yet. With these three games, the entire Erdrick trilogy will be updated for contemporary systems, offering new fans a chance to delve into the origins of the series.

As an avid gamer, I’ve always held Dragon Quest close to my heart – one of the pioneers in the gaming world, this legendary series first graced our screens way back in 1986. Although it’s been hailed as a godsend in Japan, it’s often found on the fringes elsewhere. But with the reboots of its early installments, I can see a wave of newcomers diving into Dragon Quest for the first time, and perhaps, once hooked, giving the much-anticipated Dragon Quest XII a try when it eventually drops.

Approaching almost 8 years have passed since the launch of “Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age”. The latest numbered installment in the series, which was met with widespread acclaim by both critics and fans, came out in 2017. It seems we might be looking at a wait of close to a decade (or even longer) until “Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate” arrives. Here’s hoping the extended wait will prove to have been worth it.
