DreamWorks’ Best Animated Characters, Ranked

When discussing the most beloved animated characters throughout history, Pixar often receives the majority of praise, a fact that’s easy to understand. Characters like Buzz Lightyear and Woody from the Toy Story series stand out due to their well-developed arcs, transforming from perplexed toys into brave leaders who risk everything for their friends. However, if we set Toy Story aside, Pixar still boasts a wealth of iconic animated characters, such as Dory, Lightning McQueen, and Mike Wazowski. Nevertheless, when it comes to character depth, DreamWorks is another animation studio that can hold its own in this regard, offering a roster just as impressive as Pixar’s.

Since the release of the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon”, DreamWorks has been receiving much praise. Online discussions have focused on how the adaptation remains faithful to the original animated film due to its exceptional storyline. Indeed, like many of DreamWorks’ productions, “How to Train Your Dragon” boasts memorable characters. However, only a select few of the studio’s creations can be considered among the best.

5) Hiccup (How to Train Your Dragon Franchise)

Showing courage isn’t just about recognizing when to engage in a battle, but also understanding when to avoid it. Despite his father urging him to slay dragons, Hiccup from the animated film How to Train Your Dragon chooses instead to learn more about these creatures. He forges an unlikely friendship with the fearsome Night Fury named Toothless and educates his tribe that dragons are not merely monstrous beasts, but possess hidden qualities waiting to be discovered.

Hiccup stands out because he consistently demonstrates both bravery and wisdom. In times of peril for those close to him, he fearlessly engages in combat, even though he may not possess the same physical power as his peers. Additionally, he is open-minded and willing to hear other perspectives, often taking the time to listen when someone disagrees with him.

4) Toothless (How to Train Your Dragon Franchise)

In the world of How to Train Your Dragon, the hiccup could symbolize the bond between Vikings and dragons; however, Toothless is equally deserving of praise alongside his rider, Hiccup. Initially, given his species’ natural aversion to humans, it seems unlikely that Toothless would ally with one. Yet, in the first movie, he defies expectations by accepting Hiccup’s aid. Over the years, Toothless remains steadfast by his side, creating peace between dragons and the people of Berk, ultimately saving them from harm.

As a movie buff who’s got a soft spot for the “How to Train Your Dragon” series, I can tell you that Toothless is more than just a regular pet for Hiccup. He’s a fearsome combatant, always ready to take on dragons that dwarf him in size. But there’s another side to this dragon too – a gentle one. That side was beautifully showcased when he crossed paths with a Light Fury in “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

3) Puss in Boots (Shrek Franchise)

In Shrek’s movie series, it’s indisputable that Donkey is his closest friend. However, another animal companion of his, Puss in Boots, edges him out slightly on this list. Puss in Boots makes his debut in “Shrek 2,” initially pursuing the ogre but quickly forming a strong bond and joining forces to thwart the Fairy Godmother’s evil plan.

Following his debut, Puss continues to feature prominently throughout the entire Shrek film series, always ready for a battle. His self-assuredness is evident, leading to two solo films, one of which matches the quality of any Shrek movie. In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, our titular feline protagonist encounters Death and gains insights into true friendship.

2) Po (Kung Fu Panda Franchise)

In a nutshell, any character voiced by Jack Black becomes an instantly recognizable figure, and that certainly applies to Po from the Kung Fu Panda films. Even without much assistance, Po is remarkably relatable. In his debut movie, Po yearns for something more in life, and despite many doubting him, he gets a chance to show his worth by taking on the role of the Dragon Warrior.

In the rest of the Kung Fu Panda series, Po regularly faces formidable adversaries who tend to underestimate him. Yet, he remains unfazed by their disrespect, consistently putting forth his best effort and shielding those dear to him. Interestingly enough, Po is also known for his discerning palate when it comes to culinary delights.

1) Shrek (Shrek Franchise)

Among the outstanding DreamWorks animated characters, Shrek clearly takes the number one position. Initially avoiding human interaction, this ogre finds himself embarking on a mission to rescue a princess, Fiona. However, beneath his self-deprecating exterior lies an unexpected capacity for growth; he soon discovers that life offers more than just wallowing in mud.

In his later films, Shrek transforms into both a father and a hero. The world as a whole owes him a considerable debt, and although he prefers to relax at home in the swamp rather than engage in battle against evil, he understands the significance of doing what’s right. Shrek serves as an inspiration for all the grumpy souls out there, demonstrating that stepping outside one’s comfort zone can lead to significant rewards.
