As a die-hard fan, I hadn’t fully grasped my longing for another installment in the gripping saga of The Last of Us series, set against the haunting backdrop that Naughty Dog creates, until director Neil Druckmann stirred uncertainty about its future.
Could it be that, with his current focus on adapting the series for HBO while also managing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, there’s a chance he could become so engrossed in Hollywood, similar to George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones, leading to the TV series eventually surpassing the original source material?
At the premiere event for the first episode of The Last of Us 2, IGN posed a question to Druckmann himself. Regarding the upcoming HBO series, the creator – whom we will forever remember as Doctor Uckmann – offered his thoughts.
I’m unsure if I’ll continue with this or if there will be another chance, so I’m giving my all. Essentially, we seem to have a conclusion in sight, and that final chapter is what our story will be.
Hearing that a highly praised video game adaptation will eventually conclude is reassuring, given that all good things eventually come to an end, even among the top-tier video game adaptations. This sentiment aligns with how Druckmann has approached game development, as in the realm of video games and Hollywood alike, there are no certainties.
In the process of creating The Last of Us 1, I wasn’t certain if there would be a follow-up, hence I aimed for a conclusive finale. Similarly, while working on Uncharted 4, I didn’t know if we would get another chance, so I made it a point to wrap things up neatly. The same approach applies to The Last of Us 2 – everything needs to tie up nicely.
