Actress Florence Pugh, who plays Princess Irulan in “Dune: Part Two,” shares her eagerness for audiences to see more of her character in the upcoming “Dune: Messiah.” In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar before the release of Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” this summer, Pugh hinted at her future involvement in the Dune series. Although she didn’t reveal many details, she did express excitement about possibly having the opportunity to wear more of the franchise’s striking, attention-grabbing costumes. Notably, Harper’s Bazaar mentions that Pugh will be engaged in filming “Messiah” at some point during the summer.
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, not a magazine.
“I hope we see more of her. I want more cool outfits!” Pugh said.
In the recently released “Dune: Part Two,” Pugh made her entrance as Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV. Although she doesn’t dominate the screen, her character plays a crucial part in the storyline. As Paul Atreides rises to power, Irulan consents to marry him, but only on the condition that Paul spares Shaddam. This arrangement paves the way for an expanded role for Irulan in the upcoming film.
As of now, Warner Bros. hasn’t announced an official release date for the film “Dune: Messiah,” but director Denis Villeneuve is eagerly expediting its production, hoping to begin filming soon. There are rumors that “Dune: Messiah” might take the December 2026 slot Warner Bros. has reserved for a major Villeneuve project. The cast is gradually coming together, with Jason Momoa confirmed to reprise his role and Robert Pattinson being considered for the part of the villain Scytale.
It’s expected that Pugh’s character, Princess Irulan, may assume a larger role in the upcoming Dune movie adaptation. As a key figure in the Dune: Messiah novel, she initially serves as Imperial Consort and later joins Paul’s high council. In Villeneuve’s film version, certain alterations might be made to the original story (particularly concerning an uncomfortable subplot involving Duncan Idaho and Paul’s sister Alia). Given a 12-year time gap between Dune and Messiah in the books, some adjustments may need to be made due to the speed at which the film is being produced. However, for the adaptation to remain as close to the source material as possible, it’s crucial that Irulan has a substantial impact on the storyline.
Viewers are certain to find pleasure in her performance. With her versatile acting skills, capable of portraying numerous characters, Pugh is an exceptional addition to any movie she’s involved with. She left a lasting impression on viewers during her limited screen time in Dune: Part Two, making it promising to witness more of her in Messiah. Princess Irulan is a captivating and intriguing character within the series, providing Pugh with rich opportunities to delve into as a performer. The impressive cast is one of the defining aspects of Villeneuve’s Dune universe, where each role is expertly played by a skilled actor who perfectly fits the character. It’ll be thrilling to see what heights Pugh can reach with a larger role in Messiah.
