Dune 3 Reportedly Filming Way Sooner Than Expected (But There May Be a Problem)

Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic version of Dune has been a hit, receiving positive reviews and raking in substantial box office earnings. Even though the initial Dune movie was made available for streaming at the same time it hit theaters, it still managed to do well financially. The second part, Dune: Part Two, which was exclusively released in theaters last year, grossed over $700 million globally. To cap it all off, both films have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. With two major successes under his belt, Villeneuve intends to finish the trilogy by bringing Frank Herbert’s sequel, Dune Messiah, to the screen. However, fans are anticipating a delay in the release of the film that will conclude the story of Paul Atreides.

It seems there might be less wait time than initially anticipated for the return of Villeneuve to the world of Arrakis in Dune 3. Previously, there were discussions about him working on his next two films before revisiting Dune. However, he has expressed readiness to return to Dune now, and a recent report suggests that he could start filming his Messiah adaptation as early as this summer – a full year ahead of the previously rumored production start date.

Based on Baz Bamigboye’s report in Deadline, there were whispers at this year’s pre-BAFTA gathering concerning the fate of Dune Messiah. At the event, it was reportedly mentioned that Denis Villeneuve’s third (and presumably last) Dune film will begin production in June 2025, which is earlier than previously thought as it was believed to be summer 2026. This early start date is certainly exciting news for movie enthusiasts worldwide.

One significant problem with this timeline lies in the portrayal of one of the main stars from Dune. Zendaya, who plays Chani in both Dune films, is a revolutionary leader and Paul’s lover. Given her importance in Herbert’s Dune Messiah, it seems logical that she would be a key figure in Villeneuve’s film adaptation. However, this doesn’t appear to be the case based on current information.

It seems that Zendaya’s schedule for 2025 is packed solid. She’s got a part in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, titled The Odyssey, and they’re already shooting it. Additionally, work on Euphoria‘s third season is in progress, and she’ll be returning as MJ in Marvel’s next Spider-Man installment, which Destin Daniel Cretton will direct.

In the first half of 2025, if the filming of Dune Messiah commences in June as planned, it would line up four significant projects for Zendaya. This schedule might pose challenges and could potentially lead to availability conflicts for Zendaya. However, it’s not unmanageable by any means; it just requires careful planning to navigate this complex situation.
