As a lifelong cinephile with an unquenchable thirst for epic storytelling and a soft spot for complex characters, I find myself eagerly awaiting Denis Villeneuve’s vision for “Dune: Part Three.” Having immersed myself in the rich tapestry of Frank Herbert’s universe through multiple readings over the years, I can confidently say that the challenges and opportunities presented by adapting “Dune Messiah” are nothing short of daunting.
It’s likely that we’ll have to wait some time before Director Denis Villeneuve returns to the world of Arrakis for Dune: Part Three, but he already has a clear vision for the storyline. Villeneuve previously brought Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune, to the big screen in two films, and he intends to continue with an adaptation of Herbert’s 1969 sequel novel, Dune Messiah. During a recent panel discussion, he shared some details about his plans for this sequel, allowing us to compare these ideas with the book and anticipate where Paul Atreides is headed.
Last month, Denis Villeneuve discussed Dune at Deadline’s Contenders London event, sharing a panel with producers Mary Parent and Tanya Lapointe. They highlighted the achievements of Dune: Part Two this year and the series as a whole, emphasizing that they have been truer to Frank Herbert’s novels than previous adaptations. Despite the necessity for filmmakers to make edits and alterations from the original work, Villeneuve expressed satisfaction with his adherence to “Frank Herbert’s concept of a cautionary tale, the importance of being wary of charismatic figures, and the peril of intertwining religion and politics.” They also delved into the central love story between Paul and Chani, which forms the heart of the narrative.
For Villeneuve, the adaptation of “Dune Messiah” will have a unique twist as he stated, “[Paul] must initiate a conflict to save his companions.” While this isn’t entirely unexpected given that fans witnessed Paul and the Fremen armies departing for war at the end of “Dune: Part Two,” it does give us an idea about the specific aspects of the book Villeneuve intends to emphasize. Readers may remember that much of the combat in “Dune Messiah” occurs off-screen, with the narrative instead focusing on court drama, political intrigue, and cultural insights within the imperial palace.
What Happens in Dune Messiah?
As a cinephile diving into the plot of Dune Messiah, it’s intriguing to ponder which scenes might make the cut and which could get trimmed – but beware, there are spoilers lurking ahead! Twelve years have elapsed since the events of its predecessor, with Paul now enthroned as emperor across much of the known cosmos. He’s grappling with the devastating consequences of the Fremen Jihad he initiated, a conflict that claimed the lives of 61 billion souls. Yet, his prophetic visions hint that this was merely a prelude to humanity’s darker destiny.
Paul is wedded to Princess Irulan, yet he chooses not to father any children with her. In response, and following instructions from the Bene Gesserit, Irulan secretly adds birth control to Chani’s meals, resulting in Paul having no offspring whatsoever. The Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, and a civilization known as the Tleilaxu join forces against Paul, who are skilled in genetic engineering and distinct from other humans. This alliance attempts to undermine Paul by gifting him a clone of Duncan Idaho, created by the Tleilaxu. This move weakens his political standing and places an agent near him simultaneously. The intricacies of this plot are challenging for Paul to foresee because the Spacing Guild possesses prescience, allowing them to nullify each other’s visions of the future.
In a desperate move, Chani adopts a traditional Fremen diet for fertility, one Irulan can’t interfere with, and she becomes pregnant. However, due to years of using contraceptives, her reproductive system is compromised, leading to her death during childbirth. She gives birth to twins who bear a striking resemblance to Paul’s sister; they are born fully aware and connected to their ancestral memories. Simultaneously, a nuclear terrorist attack leaves Paul blind and causes the deaths of many others. Moved by these events, he chooses to abandon the empire and ventures into the desert as a solitary hermit. He hopes that his sister and his own children will inherit the empire, taking on the responsibilities of prophecy that were too heavy for him.
What Will Villeneuve Focus On?
In Villeneuve’s upcoming film, it seems that the action sequences will take center stage. This means we’ll likely see depictions of the jihad, the terrorist attack, and the assassination. However, there are many unanswered questions beyond these scenes. Unlike the books, Paul and Chani were not on friendly terms at the end of Dune: Part Two, so the movie will have to clarify how they mended their relationship. Additionally, it may be challenging for Villeneuve to devote significant screen time to the Tleilaxu, as they are a newly introduced element that was absent in the previous films.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair, director Denis Villeneuve has expressed his intention to create Dune: Part Three, but he doesn’t plan to work on any other films in the franchise. This would pave the way for another filmmaker to adapt the remaining four books by Frank Herbert, which become increasingly complex as they progress. Villeneuve also mentioned that if he were to make a third film, it wouldn’t follow the traditional trilogy format. Instead, he intends to do something fresh and distinct, should he return to the world of Dune.
In essence, the potential for “Dune: Part Three” is boundless as there’s no need to strictly follow its predecessors. Currently, the film is under active development, with no specific release date or production schedule determined yet. You can catch both “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two” on Max at the moment. Herbert’s books are accessible in printed, digital, and audiobook formats.
