Dune: Messiah Possibly Confirmed by IMAX

As a hardcore sci-fi gamer and longtime fan of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” universe, I can hardly contain my excitement over the potential release of “Dune: Messiah,” the rumored third installment in Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaptation. The recent confirmation from IMAX that they are planning to release a new untitled “Dune” movie on their screens in 2026 has rekindled hopes that the long-awaited sequel is finally coming to fruition.

IMAX might have given us a hint about the production of “Dune: Messiah,” the third installment in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” series. Although there were reports suggesting that Villeneuve and Legendary were working on another film, an official confirmation has not been made. The title remains uncertain as well. However, IMAX, in an exciting turn of events, has given us a clue about the release date for this anticipated sequel.

During IMAX’s second quarter earnings conference, the corporation unveiled a presentation showcasing several major films slated for release at IMAX in 2026. Among them are “Moana” (live-action version), “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” “Toy Story 5,” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Additionally, there is artwork for an upcoming Denis Villeneuve film based on “Dune,” produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. Although the title isn’t confirmed as “Dune: Messiah,” there are strong indications that this movie could be an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel. The team can choose to stick with “Dune: Messiah” or opt for a different, distinctive title.

Villeneuve and Legendary are now working on a third film in the Dune series, inspired by the science fiction novels of Frank Herbert. The second installment, titled Dune: Part Two, was released by Warner Bros. in March and has become the highest-grossing domestic film of the year, earning over $250 million. If we inquired about a potential third “Dune” movie this year, Villeneuve expressed that the production of “Dune: Messiah,” which could be its title, would commence solely if the script is exceptionally great.

“According to Frank Herbert, who started Dune with a long and intricate setup, beginnings are fragile periods. A filmmaker we spoke with compared this to screenwriting, especially when referring to Dune Messiah, or Dune 3 as it could be titled. They expressed their eagerness for the script’s completion, emphasizing the importance of preserving its grandeur without compromising its essence.”
