Dune Part 3: Release date speculation, cast theories for Dune Messiah adaptation

As a long-time fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, I am both excited and apprehensive about the potential film adaptation of Dune Messiah. Having grown up with these novels, their intricate world-building and rich characters have shaped my imagination in profound ways.

As a movie buff, I’ve got to admit, there was an immense weight of expectation on the shoulders of Dune: Part Two. And let me tell you, not only have they met those sky-high expectations, but they’ve surpassed them in the most captivating way possible.

After seeing a movie, many people may be wondering if there will be sequels or more installments to come.

Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel has been fully adapted, but there is still an abundance of additional content available.

Multiple prequels and sequels have been penned, with some authored by Frank Herbert himself, others by his son Brian, and renowned sci-fi writer Kevin J Anderson. Among these works, it seems one is under consideration for a film adaptation next.

Additionally, there are several notable characters absent from Dune: Part Two. Among them are Thufir Hawat, portrayed by Stephen McKinley Henderson, and a new character acted by Tim Blake Nelson that has yet to be revealed.

Villeneuve has publicly expressed his intention to adapt the next Dune installment, “Dune Messiah,” after finishing the first film. However, is this transition imminent? Here’s what we currently understand about potential timelines.

Will there be a Dune Part 3?

Affirmatively, the production of Dune Part 3 is verified, with Denis Villeneuve set to helm the upcoming installment.

According to Variety, Legendary Pictures and Villeneuve are currently producing a sequel to “Dune” for Legendary Pictures. However, as The Hollywood Reporter shares, Villeneuve has made it clear that his adaptation of the second novel “Dune Messiah” will mark his last contribution to the “Dune” franchise.

He added, “It’s quite enjoyable, I must say. Just as Herbert did when writing his book, I immerse myself in the role of Paul. This allows me to envision possibilities for the future and anticipate actions that may lead to successful outcomes.”

It’s clear that he’s eagerly pushing for the creation of the third movie, and he’s previously mentioned that scriptwriting for the sequel has already commenced. So, an announcement about the project may not be far off.

When we do hear anything, we’ll post it right here.

When would a potential Dune Part 3 be released?

Dune Part 3 does not currently have an official release date.

The IMAX corporation, involved in the film’s production, plans to release it in the year 2026.

I’ve heard the news that director Denis Villeneuve is currently working on not one but two exciting projects. He’s reportedly delving into the historical figure Cleopatra for a new film, as well as bringing Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction novel “Rendezvous with Rama” to life on the big screen. It seems that he intends to focus on one of these projects before returning to the world of Arrakis.

Last year at a press event in South Korea, according to Variety’s report, Villeneuve shared that he wasn’t certain about the timing of his return to Arrakis. He mentioned the possibility of taking a side trip first, perhaps seeking refuge from the intense sunlight elsewhere.

To preserve my emotional well-being, I may consider taking a middle ground, but deep down, I yearn for one final visit to the beloved place on Earth.

Who could be in the cast of a potential Dune Part 3 film?

In “Dune Messiah,” the second novel in the series, there are fewer characters compared to the first book. As a result, the upcoming story may feature a more limited number of characters.

But we likely can nevertheless expect the following returning faces for Dune Messiah.

  • Timothée Chalamet as Emperor Paul-Muad’Dib Atreides
  • Zendaya as Chani
  • Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan Corrino
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides
  • Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam
  • Jason Momoa as Hayt/Duncan Idaho
  • Javier Bardem as Stilgar

In the upcoming film, Dune: Part Two, Anya Taylor-Joy will play a larger role after making a brief appearance. Similarly, Florence Pugh’s character, Princess Irulan, will have expanded duties according to Villeneuve.

In the first part of the story, Chani felt like a mere apparition or a fleeting dream to me. She made her appearance towards the end of that segment, but come the second part, she transformed into one of its central figures, much the same as Irulan will do.

In addition, there’s another intriguing character who might make a shocking comeback: Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho. Though his demise was dramatically portrayed in the initial movie, his character transforms into a Ghola, a revived being, in the source material. Consequently, it’s reasonable to anticipate that the film version will follow suit.

I’m deeply intrigued by the character named Hayt in the novel, who was once Duncan. But could it be that there’s a hidden depth to him that goes beyond his current portrayal?

In the novel “Dune Messiah,” there are pivotal figures besides Paul Atreides that need to be brought to life on screen. These include Scytale, a Bene Tleilaxu face-dancer, Edric, a mutated Spacing Guild Navigator, and additional members of Muad’Dib’s Fremen followers. Otheym, an experienced warrior among them, and Korba, a religious figure, are noteworthy additions to this cast.

In the potential continuation of Dune: Part Two, some previously introduced characters may reappear even though they didn’t show up in Dune Messiah. These include Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin), Lady Margot Fenring (Léa Seydoux), and Shaddam IV Corrino (Christopher Walken).

If any more casting news is announced, we’ll post it right here.

What would the plot of a potential Dune Messiah film be?

Denis Villeneuve is expected to make some adjustments from the original book, following his past work on the first two films. However, it appears he will mostly remain true to Frank Herbert’s source material.

In my perspective as a moviegoer, twelve years have passed since the events unfolded in Frank Herbert’s first Dune novel. Now, I find myself drawn back into this intriguing universe, where Emperor Paul-Muad’Dib, once the humble hero of Arrakis, rules over the Known Universe with an iron fist. The Fremen, once a persecuted people, have transformed into a religious army waging war in his name. The devastating consequences of their holy crusade? Tens of billions of lives obliterated across galaxies.

Although Paul disapproves of the self-worship practiced by him and his sister Alia, he recognizes his inability to stop the violence and believes this is among the less detrimental scenarios for mankind.

However, Paul can sense dark forces at work – and he’s not wrong to.

Discontented Fremen, the Spacing Guild, the manipulative Bene Tleilaxu, the powerful Bene Gesserit, and Paul’s displeased wife, Princess Irulan Corrino, are now involved in a fresh intrigue.

Might Paul’s intuitive skills shield him and his sister Chani from their plotting, or is it inevitable that they encounter misfortune?
