Dune: Prophecy Makes a Shocking Revelation About the Sisterhood’s Past

As a longtime devotee of the rich tapestry that is the Dune saga, I must say the season finale of Dune: Prophecy left me both stunned and disheartened. Valya Harkonnen’s ascent to power was a chilling reminder of the depths some will sink to maintain their ambitions, especially when honor and integrity seem like quaint relics of a bygone era.

Caution: Contains plot details from the season finale of Dune: Prophecy. The phrase “sisterhood above all” didn’t resonate with Valya Harkonnen throughout the series. Right from the beginning of Dune: Prophecy, it was evident that Valya was highly ambitious and ready to go to any lengths to seize power. However, it wasn’t until the season finale that the extent of her plan to ascend to the rank of Reverend Mother became clear. While some viewers might have anticipated her lethal actions with The Voice, learning about the backing of other trusted sisters in her quest was a startling revelation for many. This was particularly shocking given the high number of lives sacrificed for this to occur.

Valya has consistently striven for power as a means to reinstate her family’s prestige and authority, which were tarnished following the Butlerian Jihad. Furthermore, expanding the Bene Gesserit’s sphere of influence would secure her rule over the Empire, her ultimate ambition. However, navigating this path demanded intricate strategizing, even involving manipulation within the sisterhood. Therefore, upon killing Sister Dorotea and being apprehended by Tula, Kasha, and Francesca, these four women join forces to seize complete control.

To bring about this outcome, Dorotea’s course had to be presented as an option to the followers, along with Valya’s path towards the future. When they failed to make a decision promptly, the four took drastic measures by using their collective Voice to compel obedience, resulting in a ruthless massacre. During this savage event, several of the followers slit their own throats. The sole survivor of this heartless act was Avila.

The episode would have seemed incomplete within the narrative without Acolyte Lila, who was resurrected by Tula after her death. Valya’s sister had always shown reluctance towards the plans, a sentiment that intensified upon learning Desmond Hart was her son. It is through her choice to revive Lila that events start to take a different course, as the girl develops the ability to hear from her ancestral voices, particularly Raquella and Dorotea.

In the recent installment of the “Dune” spin-off, Sister Dorotea seizes control of an acolyte’s body. As a group, they uncover a trench containing the deceased victims of Valya, Tula, Kasha, and Francesca – those slain by Valya. In conclusion, the overriding message is that the emerging Bene Gesserit sisterhood was forged from the tragic consequences of a monumental betrayal. Valya’s actions were unbefitting of her position since she contradicted the principles that the Sisterhood had always upheld.

Following Anirul, the intelligent device, being presumably destroyed, along with the reproductive rate and the disheartened followers, including Valya, now on Arrakis with Princess Ynez, numerous opportunities have arisen. The question that lingers is: what will be the effects of their actions? Given that the series has been renewed for a second season, it won’t be long before we uncover the answers.
