As a lifelong fan of the Dune saga, I am beyond exhilarated about the upcoming television series, Dune: Prophecy. Having grown up with the original novels and later being captivated by Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptations, I can confidently say that Alison Schapker has a monumental task ahead of her. However, her passion for the source material and her experience working alongside Villeneuve give me hope that this prequel will be nothing short of mesmerizing.
In a chat with Chris Killian from Comicbook.com, showrunner Alison Schapker shared that she’s ready to take on the demanding task of adapting the world seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films for television. She believes that Villeneuve’s movies have opened up this notoriously challenging-to-adapt franchise, and now provides a path for her prequel series. Schapker plans to utilize the TV format to delve deeper into the intricate storyline set in Villeneuve’s captivating environment, offering viewers a more personal perspective.
According to Schapker, Denis has skillfully crafted a stunning and elegant world that left everyone spellbound with its visual appeal. He also effectively made viewers feel deeply connected to Paul Atreides’ journey. In our TV series, we strive for the same level of grandeur and beauty, being set 10,000 years before the original story. However, Schapker noted that the medium of television provides a unique challenge in capturing and holding an audience’s attention compared to a big-screen movie.
She stated, ‘We aimed for it, emphasizing both grandeur and intimacy.’ In television production, she believes, it’s essential to get close to characters, empathize with them, and guide viewers through the narrative. Since it’s not a large screen like IMAX, the story needs to feel authentic due to limited control over the environment.

When queried about his experience working on this iconic series adaptation, Schapker expressed: “It was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating at the same time. The reason for the apprehension is the very same source of excitement, which lies in the opportunity to create something extraordinary – and someone has already achieved it! Indeed, Denis Villeneuve’s films have managed to bring ‘Dune’ alive for a vast number of people globally.
She continued by expressing that it was clear Dune is significant, impactful, a timeless classic, and all these qualities make it exceptional. Being given the chance to explore or contribute to this universe was seen as a privilege, causing feelings of both apprehension and anticipation.

Title “Dune: Prophecy” is a flexible interpretation of the prequel trilogy “Great Schools of Dune,” written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. It’s set approximately 10,000 years before Frank Herbert’s initial “Dune” novel, which is still around 10,000 years into the future from our present time. In this era, humanity is rebuilding itself after defeating its AI rulers in the “Butlerian Jihad.” The narrative revolves around the emergence of the institutions that will fill the void left by AI in this world, such as the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, Mentats, Guild Navigators, Swordmasters, and more.
The film adaptation of “Dune: Prophecy” will debut this Sunday, November 17th at 9 p.m. ET on both HBO and Max. Currently, you can stream Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies on these platforms. If you prefer reading, the novels are available in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
