As a seasoned Dune fan with countless hours spent navigating the vast, sprawling universe of Frank Herbert’s masterpiece, I can confidently say that the opening minutes of Dune Prophecy left me utterly enthralled and eager for more. The subtle allusions to later novels, particularly God Emperor of Dune, were a delightful surprise – an Easter egg for the ages!
The tale of Dune begins with a subtle reference to the series’ deeper, mystical elements, notably the book “God-Emperor of Dune.” This intriguing Easter egg had fans buzzing, given that director Denis Villeneuve has no plans to delve as deeply into these themes in his film version. Hereafter, we delve into this hidden detail you might have overlooked, but be advised: there are spoilers in store!
At the start of the movie Dune Prophecy, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) provides extensive information in the initial scenes. This information reaches a climax when a younger Valya (Jessica Barden) takes charge of The Sisterhood. Valya is selected as their leader by her predecessor, Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson). Throughout the story, it’s clear that the sisters hold Raquella in high esteem. Moreover, it seems that Raquella possesses some form of clairvoyance, as she experiences a vision before her death, and her followers interpret this as a sign or omen.
In my gaming world, as I shared my last words with Valya, I uttered a warning: “The red dust… The red… It’s advancing. Tiran-Arafel.” Later, in a clandestine chat with fellow sisters, Valya repeated the ominous phrase: “She foretold it. Tiran-Arafel.” Sister Kasha, interpreting the prophecy, added: “It’s a reckoning… A divine retribution unleashed by a tyrant.
Valya deduces from Raquella’s gaze that someone is approaching us, which sets the stage for the unfolding narrative and subtly foreshadows future events depicted in Herbert’s novels. The character known as “The Tyrant,” or God Emperor Leto Adreides II, is a title later bestowed upon him by the Bene Gesserit, and it’s worth noting that “arafel” was one of his last spoken words, as pointed out by YouTuber Quinn’s Ideas.
As a seasoned gamer, let me tell you this: “Don’t be intimidated by the Ixians. They’ve got the knack for creating machines, but they can’t craft arafel anymore. I know, I was there.” The God Emperor spoke these words on his deathbed in the 1981 novel.
The Tyrant
In the story of Dune, the Bene Gesserit are working towards creating an ideal ruler through selective breeding, yet they are cautious not to bestow power upon the unsuitable. Lady Jessica educates her son Paul Atreides with the goal of producing the “Kwisatz Haderach.” However, in Herbert’s books, Paul does not achieve this power; instead, it is his son Leto II who seizes it. Through a remarkable transformation, Leto becomes a sandworm-like being by merging with a colony of sandtrout, which grants him an extended lifespan of millennia. He rules the Imperium ruthlessly for this entire period, much to the dismay of the Bene Gesserit and many others.
In essence, it becomes clear to the reader that Leto is not malevolent but acts in the interests of humanity. However, due to his unique perspective, those around him fail to comprehend him fully, even the Bene Gesserit who perceive him as a tyrant throughout his reign – before, during, and after it. This portrayal aligns with Leto’s grand design as the God Emperor, hinting that Raquella is being shown a glimpse of a far-off future.
Tiran-Arafel
In the Bible, “Arafel” is a Hebrew term that can be translated as either “fog” or “mist.” In Frank Herbert’s book, “God Emperor of Dune,” it takes on a deeper meaning, referring to the ominous and sacred darkness of impending judgment. The inclusion of the word “tiran” in “Dune Prophecy” suggests that this darkness is the result of oppressive rule by a tyrant.
In later Dune novels, Arafel is among the numerous apocalyptic terms employed, and similar to many others, it shouldn’t be taken at face value. Firstly, it is discovered that it serves as a coded message left by Leto II, leading the Bene Gesserit to concealed riches following his demise. Secondly, its true purpose lies in fortifying humanity for the challenges ahead, encompassing the ominous shadows of uncertainty found deeper in the cosmos.

Regarding the reference to the Ixians in the quote, it’s a bit tricky to put into simpler terms. In the universe of Dune, most human societies shun advanced technology. However, Ix is a planet where people challenge this norm. Essentially, Leto is implying that humans can now start exploring technology again since he has made sure they won’t be ruled by artificial intelligence anymore. This concern about AI rule is particularly pertinent in the timeline of Dune Prophecy compared to the main story.
Raquella’s Vision
On Raquella’s deathbed, we catch fleeting glimpses of her visions – possibly foreshadowing events within the Dune Prophecy. We witness a colossal sandworm, large enough to engulf a structure as grand as a human-made palace, and brief images of charred remains, bloodshed, and a peculiar throne. These visions may unfold in future episodes, yet they also serve as warnings for the impending conflicts humanity will face. The throne, notably, might be designed for a creature resembling a sandworm rather than a human.
It’s possible this detail might be an Easter egg, suggesting Raquella possesses genuine foresight. This raises questions about her role as a “Mother Superior.” At this stage in the novels, the Sisterhood doesn’t employ Spice Melange from Dune during their rituals, meaning they don’t experience prophetic visions. Yet, the show might alter this, but thus far, none of the sisters, including Raquella, have displayed blue eyes – a characteristic often associated with Spice consumption. However, her references to “red dust” could imply she secretly consumed small amounts of spice or perhaps the Sisterhood will start using it soon.
The “Dune Prophecy” series can be watched every Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on both HBO and Max. You can also find the books in printed, digital, or audio format.
