As a fervent admirer of the captivating world of cinema, I find myself utterly enamored by the news that Austin Butler has been cast as Patrick Bateman in the upcoming American Psycho remake. The young actor’s life experience is a testament to raw talent and unwavering determination, having risen from his humble beginnings on Nickelodeon to becoming an Oscar-nominated powerhouse in the industry.
Austin Butler, who played a role in “Dune 2,” has been chosen to portray Patrick Bateman in the upcoming remake of “American Psycho,” being jointly developed by Lionsgate and Frenesy Films. Earlier speculations suggested that Butler, Cooper Koch from “Monster,” and Jacob Elordi from “Saltburn” were all vying for or hoping to secure the role, but it appears Butler has been selected. This marks a significant casting decision for the new “American Psycho”; the remake is being directed by Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his work on “Challengers,” with a script by Scott Z. Burns (known for “Side Effects” and “The Bourne Ultimatum”). Sam Pressman, son of the original film’s producer, Edward Pressman, will serve as executive producer.
Austin Butler has been rapidly rising in popularity over the past few years. After starting out as a child actor on Nickelodeon, he worked steadily through some moderate success in the 2010s. His breakthrough moment came in 2022 with his critically acclaimed performance in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, followed by impressive roles in films like The Bikriders and TV series such as Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. However, many fans remember him for his transformative role as Feyd-Rautha in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, where he captivated audiences with his portrayal of the psychotic warrior-aristocrat who was heir to House Harkonnen, and a fierce adversary to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides.
It seems reasonable to assume that Austin Butler’s portrayal of Feyd-Rautha displayed the necessary darkness and sharpness that might have appealed to producers for this upcoming Patrick Bateman. In the realm of TikTok, there will likely be comparative photos shared, placing Austin Butler next to Christian Bale, who originally played Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000). Christian Bale’s performance as Bateman was instrumental in securing roles like Batman Begins (2005), where his portrayal of a darker personality beneath a polished facade resonated. It remains to be seen if Austin Butler will follow in these footsteps: if the American Psycho remake becomes successful, the DC Universe franchise’s new Batman role could still be up for grabs…
Both versions of the American Psycho movies are adapted from author Brent Easton Ellis’s 1991 satirical horror novel. The book takes readers inside the mind of wealthy Manhattan investment banker – and total narcissistic sociopath serial killer – Patrick Bateman. Bateman is living his best life during the Wall Street boom of the late 1980s, with the right wealthy girlfriend (and mistresses, and escorts…), a top-paying job, and direct access to all the city’s most elite social spaces and people. And yet, Patrick Bateman feels he is slowly melting away into a nothing-person in all the consumerist luxury, and plays out dark primal urges (both sexual and sadistic) on unsuspecting victims.
In 2000, Mary Harron’s movie version of the original novel differed significantly from the source material; there’s no information available about how Burns plans to approach his upcoming adaptation of Ellis’ novel. Luca Guadagnino has garnered praise from both audiences and critics for his remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the sports-romance-thriller Challengers, starring Zendaya. The latter film, in particular, was notable for its innovative style, featuring non-linear time jumps, fast-paced sports action (with some distinctive camera angles), and an exhilarating soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Following Challengers, it’s equally exciting to speculate about Guadagnino modernizing American Psycho as it is to anticipate his perspective on satirizing the 1980s from a contemporary viewpoint in 2020.
The American Psycho Remake is in development.
