Dune Star Reveals Big Mistake Made Filming the Sequel

During the filming of “Dune: Part Two”, one of Hollywood’s leading actors almost faced catastrophe due to not taking regular bathroom breaks in the desert. Zendaya has disclosed that wearing her Fremen stillsuit costume created such difficulties that she made a potentially risky choice regarding her water consumption. The actress, who had already finished filming the tennis drama “Challengers” prior to working on the “Dune” sequel, encountered a distinctly challenging physical scenario in Jordan’s harsh desert terrain.

She shared with W Magazine that it was extremely hot and she found herself thinking, “Oh, the bathrooms are just so distant,” given that they had to trek to various locations. With the need to relieve oneself, at least 10 minutes were required for removing the costumes. She admitted to being apprehensive about drinking too much water due to the fear of accidentally urinating or defecating herself while on set in the suit.

Reducing her water consumption led to severe health issues, as Zendaya disclosed that she ultimately suffered from heatstroke, owing to neglecting self-care during filming.

One day, I neglected to hydrate sufficiently and ended up suffering from heat exhaustion. I felt quite queasy about it, I must say. I recall finding myself on the bathroom floor, calling my mom to confess that I wasn’t feeling well. She inquired if I had consumed any water throughout the day, to which I responded negatively. I thought I was being clever by skipping hydration, but now I understand that it’s a risky move. So, through this experience, I’ve learned a valuable lesson about the importance of staying properly hydrated.

Director Denis Villeneuve has verified the harsh conditions of filming, earlier describing them as “exhausting” due to the intense heat and strong winds. He sometimes felt as if the heat was cooking their brains, making them feel weak and fatigued.

Even though she faced difficulties, Zendaya pointed out that her tennis practice had given her a physical advantage. “I’ve developed some nice calf muscles, engaging my glutes,” she explained. “Having just finished a tennis movie, I was glad to find that I was already in fairly good shape. So it made things easier for me.

The encounter mirrors the same type of difficulties encountered by performers in other complex science fiction projects. In fact, Doug Jones, best known for his role in ‘The Shape of Water’, has earlier spoken about the challenges related to personal necessities he faced while wearing his costume.

Jones emphasized the importance of preparing digestive health before donning the suit, as he’ll wear it for around 16-17 hours daily. He wants to prevent any accidents to avoid a potential embarrassment. His biggest concern is that one day they might remove the suit and be repelled by any unpleasant odor coming from him.

In the movie “Dune: Part Two,” which was filmed on site in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, we delve into the ascension of Paul Atreides and Chani’s separate journey. Since Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed to direct “Dune Messiah,” it’s likely that the cast will encounter similar desert challenges again in future filming.

The first two installments of Dune are currently streaming on Max.
