Dune Writer Developing Live-Action Sci-Fi Project for LAIKA

As a die-hard fan of innovative storytelling and captivating cinematic experiences, I’m beyond thrilled about Jon Spaihts’ new live-action project for LAIKA! His impressive resume, filled with hits such as Prometheus, Doctor Strange, and both Dune movies, speaks volumes about his imaginative prowess. The fact that he’ll be taking the director’s chair for the first time on this original idea is a testament to the trust LAIKA has in him, and I couldn’t agree more – he’s one of the most inventive storytellers working today!

Screenwriter Jon Spaihts, known for Dune, is crafting an upcoming sci-fi tale in live-action for LAIKA Studios – creators of Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings. In this new venture, Spaihts will serve as both writer and director, narrating the story of a woman delving into a mystery that she can’t recall from a particular week in her past. The project currently lacks a title, but it’s one of several exciting live-action stories LAIKA is working on at present

In a statement, Jon Spaihts expressed his excitement about embarking on this long-awaited personal endeavor, stating that he couldn’t have asked for more suitable collaborators. LAIKA is renowned for its distinct creative vision and their dedication to crafting detailed, customized narratives, making them an ideal fit for this project

Matt Levin, President of Live Action Film & Series at Laika Studios, issued a statement expressing admiration for Jon’s renowned screenwriting work. He acknowledged Jon as an exceptionally creative and innovative storyteller, adding that they are privileged to collaborate with him in his directorial debut where he will infuse his distinctive style and heart into a completely original concept, which is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally stirring

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but admire Jon Spaihts’ impressive portfolio. He’s the brain behind Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and both installments of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga – films that have been hailed as exceptional additions to established franchises. Additionally, he penned Alex Kurtzman’s 2016 sci-fi film Passengers, starring the talented Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. This movie grossed an impressive $300 million on a budget of $150M, a commendable feat for an original sci-fi production. Despite not being universally acclaimed by critics, Passengers managed to carve out a dedicated cult following, thanks to its intriguing plot twists and the harmonious blend of sci-fi and romance drama. the balance of sci-fi and romance drama

Since 2009, LAIKA has produced five stop-motion animated features: Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. However, Missing Link was a significant challenge for LAIKA, being the most costly stop-motion film to date ($100M), yet it only generated $26.6M in revenue. Despite this setback, Missing Link still garnered LAIKA recognition with a Golden Globe award for Best Animated Feature Film and an Oscar nomination

Clearly, a live-action project will represent a unique challenge for LAIKA to handle. Furthermore, not only is Jon Spaihts’ film underway, but there are two more LAIKA live-action productions (Crumble and Seventeen) currently being developed as well
