Dungeons & Dragons Reveals Brand-New Class in Latest Unearthed Arcana

Experiencing a fresh wave of excitement when starting a new Dungeons & Dragons campaign often involves deciding on your character’s class. Do you prefer the nomadic lifestyle as a Druid or embrace the power of the Barbarian with their mighty axe? If you’re an experienced player, you may have already experimented with many appealing options. Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast has introduced a new spellcasting class: Psion, which could potentially become part of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition if it proves successful in playtesting.

The Psion playtest is quite significant, marking the first completely new class for Dungeons & Dragons since the Artificer was introduced in Eberron: Rising from the Last War in 2019. For more than five years, players have been utilizing the same core set of classes. The eagerness to explore something fresh is palpable among them. Keep in mind that the Psion class isn’t yet finalized, as it’s still undergoing Unearthed Arcana playtests which can change. The Psion class is ideal for players who wish to emulate characters like Jean Grey or Professor X within the context of D&D. This spellcaster wields psychic powers to manifest their magical abilities, intertwining magic with the strength of their mind. Additionally, the playtest offers more than just the fundamental class; it also showcases four subclass options for this innovative 5th edition class. Though Psionics have a presence in 5e to some extent, the latest edition expands upon the mind-magic concept by creating a comprehensive class centered around it.

Unearthed Arcana Psion Subclass Options

Metamorph

In this Psion class, they harness their psychic powers to undergo transformations, where their limbs can morph into formidable weapons and they heal at rates reminiscent of Wolverine. The Metamorph’s magical arsenal encompasses Alter Self, Mass Healing, and Polymorph spells.

Psi Warper

For enthusiastic gamers who delight in twisting spatial dynamics, the Psi Warper class allows you to transport yourself swiftly across the battlefield. This Psion subclass consistently offers spells such as Quick Escape, Spatial Shift, Portal Creation, and the perpetually entertaining Banishment.

Psykinetic

To access the ‘D&D’ interpretation of psychic power, you might want to explore the Psychokinetic subclass. This character wields telekinetic abilities to create defensive barriers and attack using formidable walls of force. The spells associated with this subclass include Shield, Stone Shape, Wall of Force, and a fresh experiment from Unearthed Arcana named Telekinetic Crush.

Telepath

In simpler terms, I wasn’t just speaking figuratively when I mentioned that this Unearthed Arcana would let you live like Jean Grey. The Telepath subclass allows you to hone your skills in mind magic to strengthen your mental barriers or delve into the thoughts of others. This subclass offers some potent mental magic spells, such as Command, Compulsion, and Modify Memory.

The feedback form for the Psion class will be open until June 3rd. After that date, you can continue using the subclass test documents in the Unearthed Arcana library, but you won’t have the opportunity to submit your feedback about this prospective new addition to 5e.
