As a seasoned Dungeons & Dragons player with countless adventures under my belt and a collection of Player’s Handbooks dating back to 2014, I must say that I am relieved by D&D Beyond’s decision to let us choose our own playstyle. The proposed automatic update was like a dragon breathing fire on my meticulously crafted characters!
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share some fantastic news: D&D Beyond has decided against implementing a contentious update to its digital character sheets, replacing all spells with those from the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook. This morning, Wizards of the Coast announced that D&D Beyond users can now rest assured knowing their character options, spells, and magical items won’t be automatically updated to the 2024 version in their character sheets. Instead, players who only have access to the 2014 Player’s Handbook will continue using their current rule set on their character sheet. For those of us with both versions, we can now enjoy the luxury of selecting from both sources when creating new characters! What a victory for the community!
The recent announcement signifies a significant shift in the initial plans for D&D Beyond, a platform widely used by Dungeons & Dragons players to manage their characters. Earlier, all players, irrespective of whether they owned the 2024 Player’s Handbook or not, were supposed to receive updates to their spells, magical items, and mundane items according to the new rules found in the latest rulebook. However, this change was met with resistance from fans, as many players had either not decided to adopt the revised rules yet or intended to transition only after completing their ongoing campaigns. This enforced update was perceived as an attempt to impose the new rules on all players, whether they were ready for them or not.
On D&D Beyond’s site, they expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming 2024 Core Rulebooks, considering these updates as valuable enhancements and complimentary modifications to pre-existing content. However, we underestimated the repercussions of this alteration, and we acknowledge that you should have the liberty to decide your preferred way to play the game.
D&D Beyond announced that it will proceed with a rebranding of certain items or sections, aligning with the 2024 Player’s Handbook. For instance, “Races” may become “Species”, “Inspiration” could be changed to “Heroic Inspiration”, and “Cast Spell” might be revised to simply “Magic”. However, these changes do not involve alterations in the mechanics of the character sheets as significantly as those previously planned.
