Now known as Sigil 3D VTT, this innovative game tool is a 3D, immersive tabletop that seamlessly integrates with D&D Beyond. In essence, it shares similarities with the existing 2D virtual tabletop, Maps, but boasts enhanced graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5 and additional features. Similar to any quality Virtual Tabletop (VTT), Sigil 3D VTT comes equipped with tools for designing a D&D map as well as miniatures for all the characters and beasts that a Dungeon Master might need.
For some time now, the latest version of Sigil 3D VTT has been accessible for playtesters, but it officially went live for the D&D Beyond community on February 27th. This user-friendly virtual tabletop system is completely free to download and experiment with, provided you have a D&D Beyond account. Even better, setting up a basic account on their website won’t cost a thing, allowing players to evaluate the new 3D VTT at no charge. However, it’s important to note that not all features will be accessible to users without a premium subscription.
For those who’ve been eagerly waiting for updates on Project Sigil, it’s thrilling to know that the Virtual Tabletop (VTT) version is now available on D&D Beyond. At this point, the emergence of the Sigil 3D VTT doesn’t necessarily imply that Wizards of the Coast will be phasing out Maps. Instead, they aim to sustain both the traditional 2D Maps virtual tabletops and Sigil as its 3D alternative. What You Can Do in the D&D Beyond Sigil 3D VTT
Similar to how some map features are exclusive to paid users on certain platforms, only those at the Master Tier of D&D Beyond subscription can access all the premium features in Sigil 3D VTT. However, free users can still explore the game individually and join multiplayer rooms initiated by other players. They can also play the pre-installed introductory adventure that comes with a download of Sigil 3D VTT.
To create and host multiplayer rooms in D&D Beyond, membership at the Master Tier level is necessary. This implies that the Dungeon Master (DM) of any online D&D group must have a paid subscription to invite all participants to their game. The Master Tier also grants the ability to share and load custom maps within the game, as well as extra assets for building these maps using the included builder kit.
While Maps functions within your web browser, the recently introduced Sigil 3D VTT needs to be downloaded onto your computer. Compared to tools like Maps or other 2D online TTRPG virtual tabletops, Sigil offers a more immersive video-game style virtual tabletop experience that requires greater computational power.
