Dustin May’s Shocking Near-Death Experience: A Salad Almost Took His Life!

Dustin May is grateful he didn’t strike out for good.

Recently, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitcher shared a story about an unexpected and bizarre incident (often referred to as “complete freak accident”) which prevented him from stepping back onto the baseball field for another season.

27-year-old athlete, who was out for the 2023 season due to hand and arm surgeries following injury, faced a significant setback in 2024 when a piece of lettuce from a salad became stuck in his throat. This accident resulted in an esophageal tear that necessitated immediate surgery.

Dustin shared with The Los Angeles Times in an interview on February 14 that it was most certainly a transformative experience for him,” said Dustin. “He emphasized that it was indeed a very grave situation, as this type of surgery isn’t usually performed frequently. It was undoubtedly a critical and urgent case.

To be frank, his circumstances were extremely critical; he even admitted that, without what he possessed, “I likely would not have survived the night.

As a diligent follower, I found myself experiencing an excruciating sensation in my esophagus – a condition that affects only a minuscule fraction of the population (approximately 0.003%). This rare occurrence, known as an esophageal tear, can lead to severe complications if food or bacteria from the GI tract find their way into the chest, as per Cleveland Clinic’s reports. Yet, amidst this harrowing experience, I persisted with my evening activities, almost disregarding the need for medical attention.

He said, “I’m not easily frightened or worried.” Then, he added, “Things calmed down, so I just relaxed and told myself, ‘I’m okay. I don’t need to take any action.’

Due to my wife Millie May’s persistent encouragement, I found myself in the emergency room, seeking the necessary care that ultimately led to a life-changing experience. Following my surgery, I embarked on a six-month rehabilitation journey, and now I find myself viewing the world with a fresh, renewed perspective.

In a personal reflection, I find that encounter has offered me a fresh perspective on numerous aspects of life. Witnessing something as unrelated to baseball as this event, vanish in the blink of an eye, has been quite humbling. The ordeal my wife went through during this time underscored for me how swiftly and dramatically our lives can change. It was truly a terrifying experience that left me in awe at the unpredictability of life.

As for where Dustin’s health stands now? He’s determined to make a return to the field.

He expressed that if his health is good, he feels confident about his place on this upcoming rotation starting March 16th. He needs to show this, as it’s been some time. However, he’s really looking forward to it, and his love for the game has grown even deeper.
