Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans’ New Christmas Movie’s Box Office Not Looking Good

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that the box office performance of Red One, starring The Rock and Chris Evans, has left me a bit puzzled. With such a high budget and a stellar cast, I expected a stronger opening weekend. However, as a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving film industry, I understand that the market is becoming increasingly saturated with big-budget releases. The competition from Wicked, Moana 2, and even Gladiator II is fierce!

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the action-packed holiday adventure “Red One,” starring The Rock and Chris Evans, is now gracing our cinemas. Unfortunately, it seems to be having a rough start at the box office. According to Variety, Red One might only manage a weekend gross of $30 million for this high-budget production, following an opening day take of $10.9 million from 4,032 theaters spread across North America. Given that this film is reported to have a whopping $250 million production budget, excluding marketing costs, it’s not the strongest debut for such a costly project. However, let’s remember that Red One isn’t your typical release, so it’s important to consider its unique circumstances.

Red One may face intense competition as Wicked and Moana 2 are set to release, dominating the spotlight. Moreover, these movies will be closely followed by Gladiator II, another wildcard, which could further divide audience and box office attention.

The positive aspect is that Red One wasn’t solely marketed as a blockbuster film. Back in 2021, Amazon emerged victorious in a fierce bidding war for Red One, and it was initially planned as an exclusive release on Prime Video. With the streaming wars reaching their peak, every platform was trying to secure exclusive movies and series to attract viewers.

After Amazon and other streaming platforms began releasing some of their exclusive films theatrically, with Red One being the latest instance, it’s clear that they believed the film would attract a significant audience on their platform during the holiday season. Although its box office performance was weaker, they may still be correct in their assumption. From a broader perspective, any income generated from box office earnings is essentially extra revenue for Amazon, and if the film performs well on their service when it becomes available, it will be a successful move. It’s true that they would have preferred a stronger box office performance, but its theatrical success isn’t crucial to the project like it might be for others.

Speaking of other films at the box office, Venom: The Last Dance is currently in second place, projected to earn approximately $6.1 million. To date, The Last Dance has grossed over $120 million domestically and surpassed $400 million globally. This brings it nearer to the earnings of its previous sequel, Let There Be Carnage, which raked in roughly $500 million throughout its box office run.

1st Place goes to “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” earning $6 million this week, pushing its grand total past the $20 million mark by the weekend. This is on a production budget of $10 million.
