As a seasoned dance enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this year’s Dancing with the Stars lineup was nothing short of spectacular! Each contestant brought their unique charm and charisma to the dance floor, making every performance a delight to watch.
Derek Hough and Mark Ballas demonstrated that their bond goes beyond friendship, as they are also exceptional dance duos of legend.
In the final episode of season 33 of Dancing With the Stars, airing on November 26, the current judge and professional dancer showcased their skills by dancing an Argentine Tango to the song “Libertango” by Tango Bardo.
Tonight, my dance partner Mark Ballas and I will share some fascinating ballroom heritage as we perform an authentic Argentine Tango. On our show, Derek (age 39) clarified that this dance style would feature two gentlemen.
In the past, when he and Mark were around, they observed that the dance, going back to the 19th century, had been performed by two men initially, as there were more males than women in their community during those times.
As an ardent enthusiast, I’d like to share a perspective that might surprise many. While the Argentine Tango is often seen as a passionate, close-embraced dance between a man and a woman, I’m here to challenge that notion. In my upcoming performance, it will be a captivating duet between two gentlemen. The energy, though, won’t soften; instead, it will pulse with raw masculinity.
In simpler terms, Seann William Scott expressed to Dancing With the Stars co-host Alfonso Ribiero that he found it to be quite warm, and added that it had a sexy ambiance.
It’s only natural that the friendship between Mark and Derek was highlighted during their dance, given they have been best friends for a long time and spent their childhood training in ballroom dancing together. In fact, Derek’s sister Julianne Hough lived with Mark’s family while they were all training as kids in England.
The actor said to Dancing With the Stars co-host Alfonso Ribiero, “I believed it was quite warm,” and added, “That was appealing.
He and Derek have been close friends for a long time, and they both grew up and honed their ballroom dancing skills together. Derek and his sister, Julianne Hough – a professional dancer who later became a co-host on “Dancing With the Stars” – spent many years living with Mark’s family in England when they were children.
In 2016, a same-sex dance wasn’t a first for the show. Nyle DiMarco, paired with pro dancer Keo Motsepe, performed an Argentine Tango set to “Habanera” by Georges Bizet as part of their group routine alongside their season 22 partners Peta Murgatroyd and Jodie Sweetin. Interestingly, Nyle and Peta ended up winning the Mirrorball Trophy.
In 2021, I had the privilege of partnering with Jojo Siwa on Dancing With the Stars, making us the first official same-sex duo in its U.S. version. Although we didn’t take home the trophy that year, my dance partner from season 33, Joey Graziadei from The Bachelor, and I are proud to be the current holders of the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
Here’s a glance at all the participants who graced the dance floor during the latest season of Dancing with the Stars…
The men’s performance is not the show’s first same-sex dance. That took place in 2016, Nyle DiMarco and pro dancer Keo Motsepe also danced an Argentine Tango, set to “Habanera” by Georges Bizet., while taking part in a group routine with their respective season 22 partners Peta Murgatroyd and Jodie Sweetin (Nyle and Peta went on to win the Mirrorball Trophy.)
In the year 2021, Jojo Siwa and her dance partner Jenna Johnson made history by becoming the first same-sex pair to take part in the American adaptation of Dancing With the Stars. Although they didn’t secure the victory that year, Jenna and the former contestant on “The Bachelor,” Joey Graziadei, are the current holders of the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. They were declared winners during the season 33 finale.
