Dying Light: The Beast “is Really Dying Light 3” For Techland Says Franchise Director

In a shift for Techland’s Dying Light series, the standalone expansion titled “Dying Light: The Beast” is expected to offer a different atmosphere compared to the tone set by “Dying Light 2 Stay Human,” and even more so when contrasted with the original Dying Light. In an interview with PCGamer, franchise director Tymon Smektała discussed how this upcoming game will differ from its predecessors, as well as how the response to “Dying Light 2 Stay Human” influenced the studio’s creative choices.

Smektała also discussed his concerns about how the studio seemed to stray from the path set by the original “Dying Light” when creating “Dying Light 2 Stay Human”. He acknowledges that the studio may have overlooked some key aspects that made the initial “Dying Light” game so popular, particularly its survival horror elements combined with action-adventure gameplay.

Reflecting on the development of Dying Light 1, I can’t help but marvel at how perfectly each element was crafted to form an immersive gaming experience. In hindsight, perhaps we underestimated just how special our creation truly was.

The original Dying Light was designed with our dedicated fanbase in mind, offering a hardcore survival horror experience set within an open world action-adventure. Unfortunately, when it came to Dying Light 2, we seemed to have strayed from that path. Despite its commercial success, our loyal players felt that the game lacked the intensity, fear factor, and suspense that defined the first one.

Smektała mentioned that the feedback received for Dying Light 2 Stay Human inspired the studio to develop Dying Light: The Beast. He explained that the game aims to recapture the atmosphere that the initial Dying Light provided, immersing players in a large urban landscape teeming with zombies.

We aim to gauge and equilibrate the gaming experience using ‘Dying Light 1’ as a standard, since in this game, the atmosphere creates a sense of isolation amidst a sprawling urban landscape, swarming with zombies.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about Smektała’s insights during the interview. He hinted at the expansive nature of “Dying Light: The Beast,” even stating that Techland views it as the third primary installment in the series. In essence, he referred to it as “Dying Light 3.

Perhaps the initial vision for the project was more modest, but the anticipation of Kyle Crane’s return sparked such excitement! This enthusiasm was further fueled by the possibilities we see in the latest version of the engine and our faith in the gameplay mechanics it offers.

The Beast” as “Dying Light 3,” Techland opted against formally labeling it as such because the game lacks a significant new element that would serve as the foundation for its development.

Smektała stated that while this game may not offer the groundbreaking, high-expectation new feature one might anticipate from the next sequel, it still qualifies as an excellent AAA title with substantial content.

Over the weekend, we received a trailer for Dying Light: The Beast, offering glimpses into its gameplay and some exciting news – it’s set to launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on August 22. For those eager to learn more, a fresh walkthrough has been unveiled over the weekend with additional details.
