EA Confirms Layoffs Affecting 300 Employees Across Multiple Teams and Respawn

In response to rumors circulating earlier about potential job cuts at Electronic Arts (EA), the company has indeed acknowledged that some employees are being dismissed. As reported by IGN, it appears that the Experiences department at EA is primarily affected. This encompasses teams such as the Fan Care team, customer service, and marketing.

According to a representative from the company, the recent job cuts are aimed at adjusting teams and distributing resources to foster growth in the future. This action is part of the organization’s commitment to concentrating on long-term strategic objectives.

As a gamer speaking, I’d say: “Throughout this journey, I’m ensuring everyone involved is treated with kindness and respect. My goal is to lessen the impact as much as possible by helping those affected find new roles within our gaming community whenever it’s feasible. And I’m committed to offering support during any transition periods.

According to Respawn’s announcement, they are reorganizing some staff members from their teams working on both the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi projects. In addition, the company has decided to abandon two projects that were still in an early phase of development. Although specifics about these shelved games are scarce at this point, one of them was speculated to be a multiplayer shooter based on the Titanfall universe, code-named R7 during its production.

After the announcement, it was reported (thanks to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg) that approximately 300-400 employees at Electronic Arts might be losing their jobs. It’s been suggested that out of this number, about 100 are team members at Respawn Entertainment.

Back in March, an ex-employee of Respawn, Emilee Evans (who previously held positions as an executive assistant and production coordinator), disclosed that one of the studio’s secret projects was terminated. The specifics about this project weren’t fully unveiled at first, but it was confirmed to be a multiplayer shooter game.

At present, both EA and Respawn are busy developing a significant overhaul for Apex Legends, which is being called version 2.0 of the game. Back in February, during one of EA’s quarterly earnings calls, EA CEO Andrew Wilson discussed the future direction of Apex Legends. He explained that they plan to enhance various aspects of the game along three main lines: providing better community support, making gameplay more engaging, and planning for a major overhaul in the future.

Wilson mentioned that in the future, there could be a significant, more impactful upgrade to the overall gaming experience, which he referred to as “Apex 2.0”. He emphasized that this won’t be the last version of Apex.

For an extended period, Wilson stated that the company aims to sustain the growth of Apex Legends by retaining its dedicated player base and simultaneously attracting new players who may be interested in playing it.

In the long run, we anticipate that we’ll broaden the scope of this franchise and enhance our support for our dedicated community of top-tier players, as well as new communities who wish to explore all the wonderful aspects of Apex, according to his statement.

You can play Apex Legends for free, which is a battle royale type of game, across various platforms such as PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
