As a long-time fan of the Dead Space franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment upon hearing about the pitch for Dead Space 4 being turned down by EA. Having grown up playing these games, each installment has left an indelible mark on my gaming memories, and the thought of experiencing another terrifying journey through the depths of space is tantalizingly close yet frustratingly far.
I remember the chills I got when I first played Dead Space 1, the tension that built as I fought against necromorphs in zero gravity, and the sheer dread that washed over me during those tense moments of isolation. The series has a unique ability to immerse players in a terrifying yet captivating world, and it’s something I’ve come to cherish.
The memory of Dead Space 3 is still fresh in my mind, but not for the reasons one might think. While it wasn’t perfect, there was something about the cooperative multiplayer that made the experience all the more intense and engaging. So, if a fourth installment were to be developed, I would definitely be on board, especially if it included an option for multiplayer.
I can only imagine what creative minds like Christopher Stone, Bret Robbins, and Glen Schofield could come up with for Dead Space 4. The industry may be in a strange place right now, but I have faith that the passion of these developers will eventually shine through.
On a lighter note, I’d like to ask EA: if you’re not interested in Dead Space 4 right now, would you be interested in a Dead Space-themed line of coffee mugs? Because I could definitely use one to help keep the chill off my spine during those late-night gaming sessions.
Dead Space stands out as one of gaming’s top horror series, with its remake of the first game in 2023 serving as a chilling reminder of its greatness. Interestingly, the original creators, Christopher Stone, Bret Robbins, and Glen Schofield (who have recently made waves with Striking Distance Studios and their work on Callisto Protocol), proposed a fourth installment in 2024, but EA rejected the idea.
In a conversation with Dan Allen Gaming (thanks, IGN), Schofield disclosed that the group had attempted to propose Dead Space 4 this year, but EA, both the publisher and IP holder, expressed reluctance. It appears the concept of revisiting the sci-fi setting is currently too risky for them: “We made an effort, the three of us; Dead Space 4. We discussed it this year. We didn’t delve too much; they simply said, ‘We’re not interested at the moment. We appreciate your efforts blah blah blah, and you know who to contact.’ So we didn’t pursue it further. And we acknowledged their perspective. They understand their data and what they need to release, so yes.
Stone, formerly the animation director at Visceral Games (now closed), commented: “The industry is in an unusual state; individuals are quite cautious about taking risks. Therefore, it should be approached with a degree of skepticism. Perhaps one day, who knows? We’d all be thrilled if we could do it.
Are you open to the possibility of another Dead Space game, given that it might come to fruition? Does the less-than-satisfactory experience of Dead Space 3 linger in your memory? We’d love to hear your thoughts on adding a multiplayer feature in the comments!
