EA’s Black Panther Game Cancelled, Studio Shut Down

It has become known that Electronic Arts (EA) has terminated its Black Panther game project and closed down the studio developing it. This information was disclosed by IGN, with EA Entertainment president Laura Miele explaining in an email that this decision is being made to allow EA to “hone our focus” and channel their creative efforts towards the most promising growth areas.

Afterward, Miele mentions that Electronic Arts (EA) plans to concentrate on these intellectual properties (IPs) for future development: Battlefield, Skate, The Sims, and Apex Legends. Additionally, they are developing an Iron Man game, the third Star Wars Jedi title from Respawn Entertainment, and a fresh Mass Effect installment by BioWare.

It was Cliffhanger Games that spearheaded the unnamed Black Panther game project, which was initially unveiled in July 2023. This creative endeavor was being steered by Kevin Stephens, a veteran industry leader who previously served as studio head at Monolith Productions and played a significant role in bringing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War to the PS4 platform.

As a passionate advocate for our shared endeavors, I must admit it was a challenging call to pull the plug on this project. The individuals involved aren’t just colleagues; they’re friends we’ve collaborated with, learned from, and created lasting memories alongside. We’re leaving no stone unturned in offering assistance – from helping them find opportunities within EA, where we’ve seen many flourish in new roles, to providing support during this transition period.

On a broader scale, it’s been reported that layoffs are impacting teams across EA’s mobile and central departments, as per IGN’s latest updates. We stand with our colleagues during these trying times, offering whatever help we can in navigating through this change.

Cliffhanger Games had hired professionals from both the Gears of War and Halo series to develop the Black Panther game. Their plan was to create an engaging, third-person, solo adventure. Unfortunately, it appears this project will not be released.
