As a long-time fan of EastEnders, I have grown accustomed to the twists and turns that the BBC One soap brings week after week. But Wednesday’s episode left me utterly speechless and on the edge of my seat. Reiss Colwell’s (Jonny Freeman) financial struggles have been a recurring theme in recent weeks, and it seems that he is willing to go to extreme lengths to alleviate his debts.
Caution: The EastEnders episode aired on the 24th of July, 2024 (Wednesday’s episode, now accessible on BBC iPlayer) holds surprises that have already been unfolded. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid knowing the outcomes.
In Wednesday’s episode of EastEnders, the tense saga of Reiss Colwell (played by Jonny Freeman) reached a potentially lethal turning point.
Lately, the accountant character on BBC One’s soap opera has faced financial hardships. He is going through a costly fertility treatment with his partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), and at the same time, he is responsible for Debbie Colwell’s (Jenny Meier) care in her comatose state.
With debts accumulating and expenses rising for Reiss, he and Sonia have sought alternative sources of income. Lately, however, Reiss has been trying to deceive a new client, Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), by falsely claiming that she owes him tax payments.
On Wednesdays, Reiss carried on deceiving Sonia about the location of his recent profitable endeavor’s success.
In my movie-going experience, I found myself cringing when Sharon persistently asked Reiss for the VAT receipt. Her inquiry, although seemingly harmless, had the potential to uncover some questionable dealings on his part.
Despite this, Reiss managed to deftly evade the extra charges by allegedly discovering a way around them.
Reiss, who was still eager to earn more money, came up with a fresh idea and proposed to Sharon that he would double her initial investment’s amount in a new opportunity.
During a meeting at Peggy’s, Phil Mitchell, Sharon’s ex-husband and business partner (played by Steve McFadden), prevented Reiss’s plan from moving forward by refusing to let the boxing club contribute to it.
Despite Phil’s objection, Sharon gave her approval for Reiss to use the company’s money on the new investment.
Phil expressed doubt and pressured Reiss severely by threatening to take drastic measures if he failed to provide twice the requested investment.
After Sonia went to see unconscious Debbie at the nursing home, an upset Reiss then visited his own wife in their room and closed the door after him.
Reiss shared with Debbie the recent happenings and challenges in his life, expressing his sadness over the fleeting nature of existence.
At the episode’s end, with just one opportunity left, tears streaming down his face, Reiss took the pillow away from Debbie and sadistically pressed it onto her head to take her life by suffocation.
Will Reiss murder Debbie and will this spell the end of his troubles? Somehow we doubt it…
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
