EastEnders airs blackmail twist for Linda Carter in early BBC iPlayer release

As a film enthusiast who has seen more soap operas than I care to admit, I must say that the latest twist in EastEnders is as gripping as a Hitchcock thriller. The tension between Linda Carter and her son Johnny, over her decision to take a deal with Dean Wicks’ associate Fraser, is reminiscent of the classic mother-son dynamic seen in films like “Mommie Dearest” or “Fatal Attraction.”

In the recent episode of EastEnders, Kellie Bright’s character, Linda Carter, received a startling letter that hinted at revealing her hidden past involving a murder.

When Fraser, one of Dean Wicks’ associates, proposed a deal to Linda – she would withdraw her testimony about Dean’s murder if he admitted to raping her instead – her son, Johnny, reacted with shock and dismay.

At Christmas, it was Linda who tragically stabbed Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), but unfortunately, Dean was falsely accused of the crime. However, Linda chose to accept a plea bargain in order to find resolution regarding what Dean had done to her years ago, seeking to end her destructive drinking habits and reclaim her life.

Johnny maintained that Linda shouldn’t rely on Dean for honesty; however, Linda remained firm. Gathering their accomplices Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), Denise Fox (Diane Parish), and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), Johnny disclosed Linda’s plans, and Sharon swore to thwart her actions.

Sharon was unable to convince Linda to change her mind, so she went to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who already knew the details of the situation. Enraged, Phil confronted Linda in an attempt to dissuade her from her plans, but Linda remained steadfast – not budging even when Phil, a fellow alcoholic, explained that Dean’s hypothetical confession about rape wouldn’t stop her from drinking.

A while later, Linda gently reminded Johnny that he and their elders were raised free from Linda’s personal struggles, and now she aspired for siblings Ollie and Annie to cherish similar joyful recollections.

She believed that was the sole method available, and discreetly phoned Fraser to arrange a meeting at Peggy’s bar; meanwhile, Johnny also placed a call separately.

In simpler terms, Linda disclosed to Fraser that she would retract her testimony only if Dean’s confession was officially made and handed over to the police. Fraser consented to these conditions, emphasizing that this should resolve the entire matter.

However, their encounter was disrupted when Jack apprehended Fraser, charging him with blackmail and obstructing the judicial process.

Johnny confirmed that this was down to him, as he simply couldn’t let Linda go through with Dean’s deal. But Linda was angry, wanting to fix herself without his help.

At The Queen Vic, Linda discovered an envelope labeled with her name, perched on the countertop. The contents of the letter, neatly typed, revealed a chilling message: “I’ve figured out what you did at Christmas. You’re a liar!”

Who is aware of Linda’s violent deeds, and how will Linda, The Six, and their male guardians respond to this ominous danger? (This version tries to make the sentence easier to understand by breaking it down into simpler phrases and using more common language.)

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
