As a recovering addict myself, I can deeply empathize with Linda’s struggle. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone you care about spiral down into the abyss of addiction, especially when they have children who need them.

Distressing scenes have aired for Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) in EastEnders on Wednesday.

The BBC One soap opera has been portraying the current struggle of the Queen Vic’s landlady with alcoholism, a battle marked by the ghosts of past traumas and revealing her in her most troubled state.

On Tuesday, Linda got extremely drunk and, in her state, broke in, took some items, and carelessly left Sharon’s house unlocked, which nearly spoiled Christmas for the Watts family.

On Wednesday’s show, Linda struggled unsuccessfully to conceal her ongoing drinking from her close friend Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), who was still enraged at her for allowing burglars into their home to take Albie’s Christmas gifts. Additionally, the soiled bedding on the couch from earlier remained unwashed.

Sharon instructed Linda to issue an apology to Alfie Moon, who is played by Shane Richie, for taking alcohol from the Minute Mart, and also to her son, Johnny Carter, for leaving her kids unattended. (Charlie Suff portrays Johnny Carter)

Linda emptied her pink child’s cup containing her drink, however, Sharon discovered a secret stash of alcohol in a concealed bottle and took it out (angrily).

In the vicinity of Minute Mart, I found myself approaching Alfie, expressing my regrets for my previous actions. He, in turn, expressed concerns about whether I might change for the worse after consuming alcohol later on.

Linda confronted Alfie about his previous legal troubles, which prompted Kat Slater (played by Jessie Wallace) to come to his defense as well.

In response to Linda’s teasing about Alfie’s new job and his challenges post-prostate cancer treatment regarding sexual performance, Kat offered her a vodka bottle. However, Alfie pulled back the bottle when Linda tried to take it.

Kat ordered Linda to take booze from elsewhere, prompting Linda to leave.

On Bridge Street, Linda concealed herself behind a street market stall upon spotting Johnny taking a stroll with his young sister, Annie.

When Linda approached Johnny and Annie and lied that she was sober, her son retreated with Annie.

In a struggle with prescription drug dependency, the character Lauren Branning, played by Jacqueline Jossa, noticed distressed Linda and found Annie’s lost plush toy.

In The Albert, Linda continually ordered more shots and proceeded to get further inebriated.

During the Santa float celebration at the Beale’s Eels event, Linda, in an intoxicated state, disrupted things and drew attention to herself by climbing onto the float where Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), dressed as Santa Claus, was seated. This action led to Ian falling off the float.

Alfie attempted to guide Linda away from the spectacle, yet she persisted in tossing gifts from the float towards the audience.

Recovered alcoholic Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) sternly instructed Linda to come down from a raft, but she accidentally wet herself during descent, which was cruelly noticed by Kat. Meanwhile, Alfie expressed his worry about someone named Johnny, causing Kat to question why he still cares.

Despite attempting to worsen Linda’s distress in the past few days, even Bernadette Taylor (Clair Norris) appeared distressed by what she had just witnessed.

In the Queen Vic’s upper room, Phil and Lauren offered a firm, supportive approach towards Linda’s circumstances, urging her to accompany them to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. After much persuasion, they managed to get Linda to acknowledge that she struggles with alcohol addiction.

Johnny found himself drawn in by the conversation and hugged his mom on the couch after Phil and Lauren left.

Expressing his concern for his mother’s wellbeing, Johnny stated that he was deeply concerned that her continued consumption of alcohol might cause her to suffer a heart attack or stroke, potentially making him and Annie lose both their mother and father.

As Linda told Johnny what he wanted to hear, she continued to eye a bottle of vodka.

When Johnny spotted something, he instructed his mom to leave the bar, stating that he wouldn’t allow her to cause any more harm to their family and to come back only after she had changed.

Under the veil of night, I made my way back to Sharon’s home, only to discover myself locked out. The unease that gripped me was palpable, as if a chill had settled on the very air. Inside, I could sense Sharon wrestling with turmoil, her tormented whispers echoing through the walls. Her half-brother, Zack Hudson (James Farrar), stood firm, prioritizing Sharon’s wellbeing above all else, refusing to let me in, even as Sharon’s son, Albie, cried out in fear at my approach.

As a movie lover, I found myself pounding persistently on the entrance door when Zack finally emerged, taking hold of me to urge me outside. He kindly offered to cover my expenses at a nearby hotel so I could rest and sober up, ensuring I had everything required for a peaceful stay.

Yet, with a cry of distress, Linda exclaimed that she required companionship “following all” her efforts for Sharon, prior to stumbling away on her own.

Inside, Zack held and tended to a saddened Sharon on the stairs.

At Kathy’s Cafe, Linda arrived during Bernie’s night shift, admitting that she felt compelled to drink due to the remorse she carried for having taken the life of Bernie’s brother, Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

Bernie admitted that she’ll never stop feeling resentment towards Linda for her actions regarding Keanu, yet she deeply regrets her own behavior towards Linda because she cannot bear to witness her causing harm to others, nor carry the weight of Linda’s demise on her conscience.

Offering forgiveness, Bernie told Linda that if the landlady chose to set aside the bottle and prioritize her family, he would be willing to let go of past issues.

Even though Linda felt undeserving of forgiveness, she thanked Bernie for her words, yet Bernie cautioned her that any future actions should not be dismissed as being prompted by Bernie or Keanu as an explanation.

Following her departure from the café, a somewhat disheveled Linda carried on behaving boisterously and consumed an entire bottle within the park’s gardens.

As a movie-goer, I chanced upon this captivating figure and found myself drawn back into my humble abode – almost succumbing to the allure of the bottle once more, but ultimately overcoming the temptation and discarding it altogether.

The final moments showed Linda collapsing while seated near the town square’s Christmas tree, losing consciousness.

Tomorrow, Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe), Linda’s mother, will be back from her honeymoon and discover how deeply Linda has fallen.

As she stands by Linda’s side, the day may bring even greater distress for Linda’s loved ones, ultimately forcing Linda to make a difficult decision between her family and her alcohol consumption.
