EastEnders airs double Reiss Colwell twist in early BBC iPlayer release

As a devoted cinemagoer and avid fan of EastEnders, I have seen my fair share of moral dilemmas and complex character arcs. However, Reiss Colwell’s (Jonny Freeman) storyline in the recent episodes has left me utterly appalled and concerned.

As a dedicated EastEnders viewer, I must caution fellow fans that if you’ve missed the latest episode on Monday, 22nd July 2024, which is now available on BBC iPlayer, beware of potential spoilers in our conversation. Let’s tread carefully to avoid ruining the surprise for those yet to watch it.

In the most recent installment of EastEnders, I experienced a jolting surprise as Reiss Colwell, portrayed by Jonny Freeman, kept deceiving us with his actions.

For several months, Reiss and his partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) have found themselves deeply in debt due to their decision to undergo IVF treatment once again.

Reiss’s actions of using Debbie’s money, who is in a care home after having a stroke and unable to respond, now weigh heavily on his conscience.

The care center reached out to Reiss to follow up on an overdue payment, unaware of his current predicament. Meanwhile, Sonia was hesitant to take a pregnancy test due to her previous experience with a blighted ovum and shared her anxiety with Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth).

Kathy motivated Sonia to take the test, while Reiss went to see Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) to falsely claim there were unpaid bills.

With Sharon’s memory of Keanau Taylor’s (Danny Walters) murder still fresh and her secret about his death hidden, Reiss changed his approach. Instead of pushing for a direct solution, he proposed finding a way around it.

Reiss visited Debbie, opening up to her about his remorse for his actions and the complicated situation he found himself in, which grew more complex due to swindling Sharon and deceiving Sonia.

Upon his return home, Sonia broke the news that she was pregnant. This revelation brought a brief respite from Reiss’s worries as they both rejoiced in the happy news.

In my recent movie experience, Reiss’s struggles returned, leaving Sonia disappointed as he dismissed the possibility of a successful pregnancy for them. Later, he attempted to make things right but confessed a significant debt to the care home, revealing they were considering evicting Debbie.

As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel dismayed when I learned about Sonia’s repeated disappointments with Reiss’s dishonesty. In an attempt to make things right, I found myself standing at Sharon’s doorstep, sharing the unfortunate truth that there seemed to be no escape from the financial obligations.

It seems Reiss is moving forward with his questionable deal, as he persists in requiring Sharon to deposit £13,500 into the business account.

Will Sharon wise up in time?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
