EastEnders airs game-changing twist in Linda Carter story in early BBC iPlayer release

As a seasoned EastEnders viewer with a penchant for the dramatic twists and turns of Walford, I must say that this week’s episodes have left me utterly spellbound. The narrative unfolding around Linda Carter’s struggle with alcoholism and her harrowing hospitalization is a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of addiction.

⚠️ Caution: The following information reveals plot points from tonight’s (August 14, 2024) EastEnders episode, which can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders recently disclosed a major development concerning Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), following her unexpected hospitalization due to heavy drinking. In simpler terms, the show unveiled a significant change in Linda’s storyline, stemming from her sudden hospital stay due to excessive alcohol usage.

Linda was given vodka by Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris), attempting to extract information from her regarding Keanu’s (Danny Walters) murder, unbeknownst to Bernie that it was Linda herself who had carried out the crime.

With Linda suddenly taken to the hospital due to choking in her bedroom, her mother Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) and son Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) found themselves filled with anxiety and concern.

Johnny angrily accused Gina Knight, who is Elaine’s stepdaughter and also known as Francesca Henry, of neglecting Linda and leaving her exposed, which led to a heated argument. As a result, he demanded that she leave The Queen Vic.

Following his angry outburst towards Elaine, Johnny felt a sense of relief upon learning that Linda would recover. However, when he sat beside her and expressed his remorse for past wishes of her demise, Linda uttered a heart-wrenching admission: she had been disheartened to find that she was still alive.

In a state of upset, Johnny discovered Bernie at The Albert and voiced his displeasure towards her for providing Linda with a drink. Bernie defended herself by stating she was intoxicated and distraught herself, not realizing that Linda was an alcoholic at the time.

It was clear to viewers, though, that Bernie felt terrible about how her scheming had unfolded.

In a timely manner, Callum Highway (played by Tony Clay) stepped in before Johnny could escalate further, and later on at the pub, they had an emotional conversation. During this heartfelt discussion, Johnny revealed that he may have put too much emphasis on helping Linda prepare for her court testimony against suspected murderer Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo).

When Callum shared that I was special and highlighted my good work caring for Linda, I mistakenly took it as a sign and returned his kindness with a kiss.

Despite hesitating briefly, Callum eventually declared his continued marriage and loyalty to imprisoned husband Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), whom he firmly stood by.

Upon returning to the hospital, Johnny shared with Linda that she should not have neglected her well-being, emphasizing that she required expert assistance. With Johnny pledging to secure a spot for Linda in a rehabilitation center, Linda swore to approach it earnestly and commit herself to healing and recovery.

Is Linda planning to make another attempt at staying sober? Meanwhile, can Bernie uncover the facts behind Linda’s actions toward Keanu?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
