EastEnders airs return of iconic character 37 years since last appearance

On EastEnders‘ 40th birthday, a cherished figure made a return as a spectral guest, delighting fans everywhere.

As Sharon (portrayed by Letitia Dean) found herself pinned under debris on the Queen Vic’s staircase, there seemed to be little hope for her survival.

That was, until, a vision came to her, of her adoptive mum, Angie Watts (Anita Dobson).

Angie begged Sharon to keep fighting and use her voice to get help.

Angel was last spotted on EastEnders back in 1988, passing away off-screen, yet she remains one of the most memorable figures to have graced the soap opera world.

Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer, expressed his excitement about Angie’s return, saying: “Angie Watts is truly one of EastEnders’ most powerful and memorable characters. From the very first episode, Anita brought a beloved character to life that significantly shaped EastEnders into the show it is today, and also made a significant impact on British television as a whole. Anita was our top choice when we were brainstorming ideas for our special anniversary week, and getting her agreement was like the best birthday present ever. Seeing Angie Watts walk through The Queen Victoria’s doors again, exactly 40 years after she first appeared in Walford, is a moment we will cherish as we all celebrate this iconic show that has left an indelible mark on British television. Happy Birthday, EastEnders!

Dobson expressed his gratitude about the memorable experience by saying, “I must express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone from EastEnders for making me feel so included. It was truly delightful. As soon as I donned the costume, it felt like a moment of awe. It was both wondrous and peculiar all at once.
