As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for soaps and a memory that can recall characters from decades past, I was absolutely thrilled to see Nigel Bates make his surprise return to EastEnders on Christmas Eve! I remember him fondly as a charming, lovable character who shared a unique bond with the iconic Dot Cotton. His romantic journey and struggles were always captivating, and his departure from Walford left a void that hasn’t been filled since.

EastEnders has aired a surprise comeback on Christmas Eve.

For a while now, the BBC One soap opera has been building tension for an exciting holiday season climax. However, one surprise comeback over the yuletide that few anticipated was the unforeseen Christmas return of a familiar character.

On Tuesday’s broadcast, Yolande Trueman, portrayed by Angela Wynter, underwent a moving reawakening of her faith following her attendance at a support group established by individuals affected by the late serial sexual abuser Pastor Gideon Clayton. This pastor had taken his own life not long ago.

Following a touching instance where her faith was renewed, Yolande subsequently made an appearance at the Walford Community Center Soup Kitchen, serving meals and beverages to the homeless and less fortunate.

However, a further surprise lay in store in the soup kitchen.

Among the many characters she tended to, there was one familiar face – Nigel Bates, portrayed by Paul Bradley. Now, he appeared a bit unkempt and somber.

As Yolande asked what brought Nigel to Walford, he answered wistfully: “Memories.”

They clinked glasses with sherry, exchanging ‘Merry Christmas’ greetings, yet it is the mystery of Nigel’s return to Walford that intrigues us.

Previously, it was announced that Nigel might come back unexpectedly for the 40th anniversary festivities. However, what nobody anticipated was his return happening during Christmas instead.

Who is Nigel Bates in EastEnders?

Nigel Bates, played by Paul Bradley, was an EastEnders character from 1992 to 1998.

As a fellow film connoisseur, allow me to share my thoughts on the character of Nigel, initially introduced as the light-hearted sidekick to the Mitchell Brothers from their school days. Before settling in Walford, following the tragic loss of his mother, Nigel paid a visit to Phil and Grant – an event that would eventually lead him to join this dynamic EastEnders family.

During Nigel’s stay in Walford, he developed a significant bond with Dot Cotton (played by June Brown), who he lived with. This was one of many friendships Dot formed with troubled characters on the show. In essence, Nigel came to be seen as a substitute son by Dot, but this arrangement sparked resentment in her real son, Nick Cotton (John Altman), due to his villainous nature.

Nigel’s primary narrative on the show revolved around his romantic involvement with colleague Debbie Tyler, portrayed by Nicola Duffett, and his transition into being a stepfather to her daughter Clare, played by Gemma Bissix. Throughout this journey, Liam, played by Francis Magee, the abusive biological father of Clare, continually sought to disrupt their relationship.

Unfortunately, Nigel’s brief marriage with Debbie ended tragically when she was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. This incident led Nigel to fight against the abusive Liam in a custody battle, which he eventually prevailed in.

In time, Nigel developed feelings for Lorraine Wicks (Jacqueline Leonard), but these feelings complicated matters because she was already involved with Nigel’s close friend, Grant, who was married.

In the end, Nigel encountered love again with school teacher Julie Haye (Karen Henthorn), but his constant sorrow over Debbie nearly hindered this relationship. Fortunately, as Julie prepared to relocate to Scotland with her son Josh Saunders (Jon Lee), Nigel realized his mistakes and declared his affection for her. This led to both Nigel and Clare deciding to embark on a new life in Scotland along with them.

After that, Nigel was frequently referred to and Dot made a visit to him. Clare came back to Walford in 2008 for a while, portraying a very distressed and vindictive character who had grown distant from her stepfather. Eventually, she departed Albert Square again.

Nigel was absent from Dot’s funeral in December 2022 and his absence went unexplained.

So, what brings Nigel back to Walford now?
