EastEnders airs surprise return as character is back from the dead

As a long-time EastEnders enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many iconic characters, I must say, this week has been quite the rollercoaster! The return of Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) was a surprise I didn’t see coming, but it’s been nothing short of thrilling.

*Caution: Reveals plot points from the EastEnders episode broadcasted on BBC iPlayer today, and set to air on BBC One this evening.*

This past week has seen an exciting return of familiar faces on EastEnders, notably Tracy-Ann Oberman stepping back into the shoes of the legendary Chrissie Watts.

Encountering Sharon (Letitia Dean) during her week-long stay in prison due to court contempt, Chrissie’s reappearance on our screens has been quite an emotional rollercoaster. As she embarked on a mission for revenge against Sharon, her feelings later shifted when she shared the news of her miscarriage with her.

Tonight’s episode holds a fascinating twist, as it unfolds on BBC iPlayer: Chrissie, who has spent the past 19 years in prison, is about to step out of her cell and experience freedom once more.

Throughout the episode, Sharon and Chrissie engage in an emotional conversation about Chrissie’s murder of Den Watts (Lesley Grantham) from December 2005. Additionally, the episode features Chrissie reconnecting with a past love for a fitting farewell scene on Albert Square.

Towards the end of the episode, you’ll notice that liberated Chrissie arrives at the Queen Vic in an old-fashioned red convertible, accompanied by a cryptic figure.

That’s right, it’s none other than Jake Moon (Joel Beckett).

In an uncommonly tranquil instance on the square, there lies a parking lot next to the café – a detail that only Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) notices as they make their way around. Upon stopping, Chrissie exits the car, now adorned in heels and a dress, and gazes towards the Queen Vic pub.

As Chrissie spoke, Jake stepped aside from her and gazed upward at the pub. “I simply had to catch a glimpse one last time,” she said. “How about a quick pint?” (This version aims to maintain the same meaning while using simpler, more conversational language.)

However, they hadn’t planned on taking a break for a drink, as Jake put it, “I’ve been waiting 19 years to lay my hands on you again. A quick one at the Vic wasn’t part of my scheme.

After giving the pub one last glance, the duo climbed back into their vehicle and set off towards the sunset in the East End. Coincidentally, as they were driving off, Jake’s cousin Alfie (Shane Ritchie) stepped out of the pub, oblivious to the fact that his kin had been so close moments before.

Back in 2004, Jake initially appeared on the town square, and he briefly dated Chrissie. They rekindled their romance at a later point, only for their relationship to be disrupted due to a significant discovery: Chrissie was responsible for Den’s death.

Meanwhile, despite Chrissie being imprisoned, Jake persisted with their relationship. However, things changed when he popped the question. In response, Chrissie disclosed her intention to admit guilt for Den’s murder and asked him not to come see her in prison anymore.

I found myself in a confusing situation regarding the storyline of EastEnders, as it seemed that Jake’s departure was left ambiguous rather than definitive. It appeared to many viewers, including myself, that he may have been accidentally killed by one of Johnny Allen’s (Billy Murray) associates.

Following his decision to depart from Walford, Jake encountered an individual who made us suspect he might have met a tragic end. However, much like in EastEnders, characters with past connections tend to resurface, creating intrigue about Jake’s possible return.

Although it’s unlikely that Jake or Chrissy will return to the square since they are starting a new life elsewhere, it’s hard to completely dismiss the possibility of their return.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
