As a long-time EastEnders viewer and avid fan of Nigel Bates, I must say it’s like a breath of fresh air to see him back after all these years! Growing up with the Mitchell Brothers and Dot Cotton, Nigel was more than just a character on our screens; he felt like an old friend.
It’s lovely to see old friends at Christmas!
The popular soap opera, EastEnders, plans to bring back Nigel Bates (played by Paul Bradley) and his long-time friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in a heartwarming holiday special. Chris Clenshaw, the show’s executive producer, hints that there are exciting developments ahead for these two characters.
On Christmas Eve, Nigel unexpectedly came back, contrary to tabloid rumors suggesting his return would coincide with the 40th anniversary. However, one might wonder what has drawn him back to the Square now?
In the year 1998, the character bid farewell to Albert Square, setting off on a fresh journey towards Scotland alongside his girlfriend Julie Haye (played by Karen Henthorn), her son Josh Saunders (Jon Lee), and his cherished step-daughter Clare Bates (Gemma Bissix).
What could possibly draw Nigel back to Walford, where he was well-known for his close bond with the Mitchell Brothers, particularly the absent Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), and acting as a surrogate son to Dot Cotton (June Brown)? He had a unique, happy ending when he left, so what past moments could be compelling enough for him to return?
Speaking about Nigel’s comeback, executive producer Chris Clenshaw expressed his excitement saying, “We are thrilled to have Paul Bradley rejoin us as the beloved character, Nigel Bate, who has been a fan favorite among long-time EastEnders viewers.
He added: “There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Phil has never needed support more than he does this Christmas, so we’re excited to reunite these two old friends.”
Talking about his comeback, actor Paul Bradley, who portrayed Nigel from 1992 to 1998, expressed: “I’m overjoyed and humbled to be playing Nigel once again. Even though it’s been quite a while since then, I’m still often recognized as Nigel on the street.
Coming back has been wonderful since I’ve recognized so many friendly faces at EastEnders. It’s truly enjoyable to collaborate with Steve McFadden once more; his talent inspires me greatly, and he truly raises the bar. I’m really enjoying myself here.
At the EastEnders Christmas gathering in December, Clenshaw mentioned to the media: “There has been some talk about this, but rest assured, Paul will be returning. It’s fantastic to have him back, and he’s here for an extended stay.
Regarding Philip’s tale, the executive producer commented: “Although he has his family nearby, he’s still grappling with difficulties. And true to form with Steve McFadden, his performance continues to amaze me as we approach the holiday season.
Telling a captivating, unique tale is made even more intriguing when considering a character such as Phil Mitchell, whom many of us seem to be familiar with, or recognize similarities in our acquaintances.
Last week, I finished a truly exceptional episode, and Steve delivered an outstanding performance.
After a long absence from Albert Square, which was last seen by us in 1998, it’s intriguing to ponder why Nigel has returned now. Let the theories flow freely!
