EastEnders’ Cindy Beale chaos beats Coronation Street and Emmerdale in Christmas Day 2024 ratings

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the ebb and flow of soap operas for decades, I must say that the Christmas Day ratings battle among the soaps was a fascinating spectacle this year. EastEnders’ victory was well-deserved, with their gripping storyline and the shocking revelation about Cindy Beale’s affair keeping viewers hooked until the very end.

Team Walford has won the Christmas Day ratings battle among the soaps.

On Christmas Day 2024, EastEnders ranked highest in the BARB overnight ratings among the top three soap operas. Each of its two-episode installments were the most-watched soap operas that day.

7:30 PM saw approximately 3.98 million viewers tuning into BBC One for the premiere, where Cindy Beale’s (Michelle Collins) secret affair with her former step-son Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) was ultimately revealed at The Queen Vic.

After the highly successful finale of Gavin & Stacey, approximately 4.39 million viewers tuned into EastEnders to catch up on the ongoing storyline. The season culminated with a suspenseful whodunnit regarding who attacked Cindy Beale, and it has been announced that this mystery will be resolved during the show’s 40th-anniversary episodes in February.

Stepping away from the limelight for a moment to share some heartfelt thoughts about a television series, I found myself moved by an exceptional episode of Coronation Street this week. The character Gail Rodwell, portrayed brilliantly by Helen Worthy, bid farewell after an astounding 50-year run on the cobbles of Weatherfield – quite a remarkable milestone indeed!

In this installment, longtime resident Gail tied the knot for the third time with Jesse Chadwick (played by John Thomson), marking the end of her journey with the Platt family and her street friends, as they all parted ways with warm feelings.

2.47 million viewers tuned in to ITV1 for Gail’s final episode at 7 pm, but since it was also available on ITVX at 6 am, it’s uncertain how early release might have influenced overnight ratings. Meanwhile, Coronation Street faced competition from Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and the premiere of EastEnders.

Just like Emmerdale, another popular show, it didn’t manage to crack the top 10 most-watched programs on Christmas Day 2024. However, at 6.30 pm on ITV1, it did attract 2.1 million viewers instead.

Similarly to Corrie, Emmerdale was prematurely aired on ITVX at 6 am. It’s yet to be determined how significantly this affected its viewership. However, it should be noted that during the same timeframe, the soap faced competition from Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which attracted 9.38 million viewers overnight.

In the captivating saga of the Yorkshire soap opera, I found myself deeply engrossed as Kim Tate (Claire King) faced another wave of turmoil at Home Farm. Tragically, her husband Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) succumbed to a heart attack. A heartwarming moment unfolded when Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) was reunited with her long-lost dog Piper, who was thought to be gone. The narrative took an unexpected turn as April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) mysteriously vanished in a gripping tale of suspense.

In the end, we’ll need to observe the results after the combined ratings are available, as they take into account both delayed viewing and on-demand options.
