Today, viewers had the opportunity to influence twice, making crucial decisions about EastEnders‘ future.
Prior to the live broadcast, viewers were given an opportunity to decide whom Denise Fox (Diane Parish) would ultimately be with, as well as the name chosen for Sonia Fowler’s (Natalie Cassidy) newborn child.
In an homage to the early days of EastEnders, viewers were invited to decide between the names “Julia” and “Toni”, which are reminiscent of Julia Smith and Tony Holland, the originators of the long-running BBC drama series.
After voting for just under 24 hours, fans have decided that Sonia should name her baby Julia.
In a live broadcast, Sonia was surrounded by her cherished sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and pregnant cousin Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) as she gave birth. Unfortunately, the lifeless body of the child’s father, Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman), the murderer, was nearby.
When Bianca gave birth, she urgently sought medical guidance from Nurse Sonia because the newborn appeared blue. However, once Sonia tended to the situation, the infant started crying, bringing joy to all three of them.
The paramedics soon arrived to attend to them, to a sarcastic response from Bianca.
The trio and the baby soon left the pub to the delight of the whole crowd outside.
In the ambulance, Sonia spoke with love to her baby as a voiceover revealed her name as baby Julia.
