EastEnders’ Harriet Thorpe explains Elaine Peacock’s revelations about Linda’s father

As a cinephile with a rich tapestry of life experiences, I find myself deeply moved by the emotional journey of Harriet Thorpe‘s character, Elaine Peacock, on EastEnders. The complexity and depth of her character, particularly in dealing with the revelation about her late husband Brian and his sexuality, resonates profoundly with me.

Actress Harriet Thorpe discusses the feelings her EastEnders character, Elaine Peacock, experiences as she discloses the truth about Linda Carter’s deceased father, Brian, and their marital history.

On Tuesday’s show, Elaine revealed some personal details about her deceased husband Brian to her daughter Linda and grandson Johnny Carter.

It came to light that Brian had been hiding his homosexuality during his marriage to Elaine, and he carried on an affair with Drew (Paul Clayton), a fact that Elaine was aware of for the majority of their union.

For Linda, these recent disclosures are quite a challenge to handle. After all, it wasn’t an easy period when Johnny came out as gay in 2014, and now learning that the father she admired so much and considered macho is also gay has significantly affected her perspective on her family life during childhood.

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: “For me personally, what truly resonated in the film is Elaine’s unapologetic embrace of her circumstances. She wholeheartedly loved and stood by her husband, despite his fear of societal judgement. This courageous woman refused to hide behind a facade, choosing instead to be authentic and true to herself.

In my perspective, I wished to pay tribute to my husband, but since he was in a situation where such an action wasn’t feasible, I took on the responsibility instead. His macho stance made it difficult for him to handle potential judgment at that time. Yet, what truly matters to me is that he could rely on me being there for him.

Elaine experienced a painful reality: she found it devastating when her partner revealed he wished to be with another man. This wasn’t about feeling betrayed or lost, but rather the shock of discovering something she hadn’t anticipated, which was normal in society. She understood and accepted his feelings, and chose to support him because she empathized with his fear of judgment from others. Consequently, she kept his secret, as it was crucial not to disclose this personal matter.

Absolutely, this entire situation resurfaced for Elaine when she unintentionally encountered Brian’s partner, Drew Peacock, whom Johnny had hired for Elaine’s bachelorette party.

Speaking about Elaine’s surprise at running into Drew Peacock once more, Thorpe noted: “I believe it’s because her fantasy is being realized – he’s at her bachelorette party. It was all planned to be a joyful occasion. But then, there was this man who, as you recall, was her husband and had passed away.

Then, unexpectedly, there emerges an individual connected to the situation that she had been maintaining a facade for her daughter’s and husband’s sake. This surprise reappearance occurred during her wedding, which was particularly jarring because it seemed to arise without warning, even from an unanticipated direction. I believe this event may have stirred feelings of self-doubt in her about her worth.

Absolutely, this event isn’t merely significant for Elaine, but it’s potentially life-altering for Linda who has already strayed from her original path.

Regarding Linda’s response, Thorpe comments: “Linda deeply adored and respected her father, yet she had little understanding of the challenges faced by a parent, specifically the role of being strong, maintaining composure, managing the pub, and juggling various responsibilities. Linda believes her mother was absent during her upbringing, but she was present; however, she was also trying to support her husband who was struggling with significant problems. So it’s hoped that Linda comes to understand that her mother was always there for her, even if she didn’t realize it.

Could this bring an all-new understanding from Linda to Elaine’s past and recent behaviour?
