EastEnders hints at comeuppance for Reiss in early BBC iPlayer threat

As a long-time EastEnders viewer and avid follower of Walford’s most scandalous stories, I have seen my fair share of deceit and betrayal. But Reiss Colwell’s (Jonny Freeman) latest scheme may just top them all.

⚠️ Note: The following discussion reveals the ending of today’s (July 30, 2024) EastEnders episode on BBC iPlayer. Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet.

Reiss Colwell (also known as Jonny Freeman) could face severe consequences for his wrongdoings in EastEnders, hinting that his punishment may not be far off.

1. After murdering his wife Debbie (Jenny Meier), Reiss encountered Brenda (Nichola McAuliffe) and Hugh Collins (Michael Bertenshaw), his parents-in-law, following the incident. They questioned him about what led to Debbie’s unexpected demise.

However, upon Sonia Fowler (played by Natalie Cassidy), Reiss’s partner who is pregnant, expressing her sympathies, and Brenda inquired about the woman, Reiss falsely stated that Sonia merely served as his landlady.

Back at Sonia’s house, it was clear that Hugh was a kind man, while Brenda was rather prickly.

Simultaneously, a quiet conversation unfolded between Reiss and Sonia in the kitchen. He confided in her that he was hesitant to disclose the real dynamics of their relationship to Hugh and Brenda. However, after promising there would be no more deception, they shared an embrace. Unfortunately, this moment of intimacy was interrupted as Brenda walked in and witnessed them.

As a movie lover, I can rephrase that sentence like this: Brenda hesitated to give her approval to Hugh, implying that perhaps his love for Debbie hadn’t been as profound as we thought.

The situation grew more tense as Sonia mentioned that she and Reiss frequently visited Debbie at the care home, whereas Brenda and Hugh hadn’t personally appeared there.

In an open discussion, it came to light that Hugh and Brenda were disheartened by Debbie’s circumstances. When asked about the unpaid care home bills, Reiss deceived Hugh, claiming there was merely a mix-up with the bank.

Later on, Reiss and Sonia attended Martin Fowler’s (James Bye) birthday party, while Hugh and Brenda dropped by a café. There, they listened in as Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian) talked about how Reiss was using Debbie’s money for IVF treatment with Sonia.

1. Brenda didn’t hesitate to challenge Reiss, and she let Sonia know that she herself had contributed money to Debbie’s account. This means that not only did Reiss take from Debbie, but also from Brenda herself, someone very close to him.

1. As Hugh learned about Sonia and Reiss’s upcoming child, feeling sad because it meant he wouldn’t become a grandfather, Reiss informed Brenda that he would repay her.

Instead of being drawn to the money, Brenda expressed indifference and shared that she’d suspected Reiss wasn’t as benevolent as he appeared. Moreover, she disclosed that Debbie had previously shown apprehension towards Reiss prior to her stroke.

1. In a captivating display, McAuliffe portrayed her character with unflappable composure as she threatened Reiss, warning him she would reveal the money to the police. She further asserted that an investigation into him would uncover deeper, unsavory details.

With Brenda rightly suspicious of Reiss, is he set to be exposed by the mother of his victim?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
