EastEnders Icon Nearly Missed Role of a Lifetime: Anita Dobson’s Last-Minute Casting as Angie Watts!

Initially, it wasn’t Anita Dobson who was supposed to play Angie Watts on EastEnders; another actor had been selected for the part first. However, Anita later shared how she came very close to not taking up that famous role.

In an episode of Lacey Turner’s podcast, We Started Here, commemorating EastEnders’ 40th anniversary, Dobson shared that her audition and subsequent casting happened only a few days prior to the start of filming.

Dobson mentioned that another actor was initially chosen for the role of Angie Watts, but things changed at nearly the last minute – more like the 11th or 12th hour. It all seemed destined to happen. I got cast on a Wednesday and started filming just a few days later, by Monday. The process moved remarkably swiftly.

When Turner inquired if it was nerve-wracking arriving so unexpectedly, Dobson responded: “Indeed, anything thrilling often brings fear, doesn’t it? Yes, it was frightening, but I felt like I already knew this woman. I recognized her. It was simply a pleasure to perform. Truly, it was a blessing. I feel incredibly fortunate that such an opportunity presented itself. It transformed my life.

In the very first episode of EastEnders, Dobson made her debut and portrayed the character Angie from 1985 up until 1988. After that time, she chose to depart the series and never reappeared. Tragically, it was announced in 2002 that Angie had passed away off-screen.

During their conversation on “We Started Here”, Turner and Dobson additionally discussed the pre-recorded live episodes of the program in preparation for its upcoming live broadcast to celebrate the 40th anniversary.

Turner expressed enthusiasm, stating, “It’s thrilling; this is your only chance,” he added. “I wasn’t feeling great when I did the first one. I had lost my voice for the 25th and they took me to have cameras examine my throat. At that point, I thought, ‘What’s all the commotion about?’ It turned out she was Archie’s murderer.

They were causing a big commotion because… And I was informed at 20 minutes after seven, which is when we started our live broadcast at half past seven. So I hope they won’t make me wait like that this time!

Lately, Dobson has appeared on screen as the enigmatic Mrs. Flood in Doctor Who. She hinted that there will be more revelations about this character in the near future.
