EastEnders’ Jamie Borthwick on why prior training won’t help him on Strictly

EastEnders’ Jamie Borthwick on why prior training won’t help him on Strictly

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for British television shows, I must say that the latest Strictly Come Dancing drama has caught my attention. Having been immersed in the world of TV for quite some time now, it’s fascinating to see the dynamics among contestants and their past experiences.

Viewers of Strictly Come Dancing might have been taken aback initially upon seeing EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick participating, given that he had only recently appeared on the program.

Indeed, it’s true that Borthwick featured in the Christmas special of last year, teaming up with Nancy Xu and ultimately emerging victorious. However, prior to that, he hadn’t starred in an entire season.

Despite his success, Borthwick admitted this week in TopMob magazine that some other competitors are capitalizing on his achievement.

Borthwick said: “Wynne [Evans] won’t let me forget it, nor will Pete [Wicks]! I’m feeling good…”

While Michelle Tsiakkas commented, “Wynne occasionally exclaims, ‘Cheating!’ However, it’s important to remember that JB Gill has also triumphed in the Strictly Christmas special.

Borthwick commented, “I hadn’t anticipated returning here, but it seems like everything I learned from Nancy [Xu] has slipped my mind.

During the interview following the competition, Borthwick shared that he had no formal dance background, explaining humbly, “None at all. I mainly bob my head and wiggle my fingers.

Although I attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a few classes, people often assume I can dance due to this association. However, I must confess, I wasn’t very attentive during my time there.

Borthwick, just like many other celebrities, hasn’t been the initial one to refute allegations of an edge gained through past dance expertise; quite the contrary, this is a common scenario.

To be clear, I’m not the first this season to have a unique background. Just like Tasha Ghouri, who’s stepped into the spotlight with a commercial dance past, she shared that her dancing days are largely behind her: “I haven’t danced for quite some time now – ever since Love Island, my career has taken me in a completely different direction.

This dance form is quite distinct from what I’m used to, and I might find it challenging since my skills lie more in commercial street styles. Nevertheless, I’m eagerly looking forward to taking on this new challenge, even though I realize it may not come naturally to me, like ballet doesn’t.
