EastEnders Kat Mitchell suffers heartbreak after Tommy update in early iPlayer release

As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of many troubled families on screen, I must say that the latest turn of events in EastEnders leaves me with a heavy heart. The storyline involving Kat Mitchell/Slater (Jessie Wallace) and her son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) is as harrowing as it is compelling.

On the soap opera EastEnders, Kat Mitchell/Slater (portrayed by Jessie Wallace) faced a challenging day when the child welfare agency arrived at her home, following reports of concerning accusations leveled against Tommy (Sonny Kendall).

For the last few weeks, he’s been acting violently, even attacking his own mother and his younger siblings, whom we know as Bert and Ernie.

To put it another way, I found myself unable to communicate or connect with other family members regarding Freddie (Bobby Brazier). Unfortunately, my actions towards him turned violent and brutal.

For Gillian Wright (Jean), she determined it was necessary and initiated a report to the social services. Shortly after, they visited and engaged in conversation with Kat regarding her child.

After speaking with Alfie (Shane Richie), the twins, and Tommy himself, they ultimately decided that it was not secure for little Bert and Ernie, who have existing bruises, to remain in the same household as their older brother.

In simple terms, Kat was told by the social worker that she’d have to put her signature on a document known as Section 20. This document grants the necessary legal power to officials to remove a child from their home if it becomes unsafe for them to stay with their parents.

They were open to allowing Kat to discover an appropriate solution close by, maybe even involving a relative.

Kat rushed out of the house, knocking loudly at the Slater residence, to request Stacey (Lacey Turner) and Jean if they would let her stay with them.

However, since Jean initially contacted the social services, and Stacey, after some hesitation due to her mother’s concerns about Tommy being harmful, both declined Kat’s request. This action seemed to anger Kat, who threatened not to forget their decision.

Kat tried Phil (Steve McFadden) next, but he wasn’t home and she couldn’t get in touch with him.

Bianca (played by Patsy Palmer), a compassionate soul, proposed taking him in, although she’d extended such hospitality before. The crowd showed interest, but their curiosity waned when she clarified that she wasn’t residing in her own home and her sister was behind bars, awaiting trial for a murder charge.

It appeared as though Tommy was about to be moved to a new home, but just before departing, he took the opportunity to hurt Kat and Alfie. He scolded Alfie for his constant joking, and in a cruel manner, told his mother that he was ashamed of her.

The disturbing scene was interrupted by Zack (James Faraar), who lives next door and, as a registered foster parent, could take Tommy in.

As a film aficionado, I must confess that while the community expressed approval, I found myself feeling a mix of emotions upon realizing my beloved character, Kat, would be moving to the neighboring set. Despite her apparent contentment with the prospect of being next door, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness knowing she was leaving altogether.

After leaving the house, Kat faced Alfie and expressed her anger, thinking it was him who had alerted the authorities.

As a passionate movie-goer, I found myself vehemently denying my involvement when accusations came my way, but alas, it seemed the situation had spiraled out of control. Intense Kat, seemingly cornered, pushed back against all who approached her, creating an air of tension and unease.

Given her profound sorrow, what becomes of Tommy from here on? Will she uncover the truth that it was indeed Jean who reported him to social services?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
