EastEnders’ Kat Slater faces huge shock in early BBC iPlayer release

As a long-time fan of EastEnders, I have witnessed Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) face many challenges throughout her time in Albert Square. But the latest turn of events has left me feeling deeply concerned for her and her family.

In the recent episode of EastEnders, Kat Slater, played by Jessie Wallace, experienced a challenging evening as her complex new plotline unfurled.

Earlier this week, Kat was punched in the stomach by her son Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall), and she shoved him to the floor in defence. Tommy later reported his mum to the police, telling them that she had been hitting him!

When officers showed up at Kat’s apartment for a talk, she suddenly left the room, intercepting Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) upon his arrival home. Alfie was taken aback when Kat disclosed the details of her encounter with Tommy, prompting him to seek out the youngster.

I was appalled at Tommy’s actions towards Alfie’s mother at their house, and couldn’t help but question the kind of person Alfie’s son was becoming.

Alfie went on to tell Tommy that instead of living with his ex-stepfather Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) as he preferred, social services would intervene, resulting in Tommy being placed in foster care. Additionally, his twin brothers might be taken away from their parents and each other under these circumstances.

As I watched Tommy’s puzzled expression next to Alfie, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy. I knew all too well how easily actions could spiral out of control. Meanwhile, the detective’s questioning tone echoed through the room as Kat was grilled about her past relationships. She had parted ways with Phil, coping with the challenges of co-parenting with Alfie, and welcoming a child fathered by Alfie’s late cousin Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd). It wasn’t an easy situation to be in, and I found myself holding my breath, waiting for the next revelation.

After some time, Alfie came back with Tommy in tow. The police spoke to Alfie privately, keeping Kat away. Upon their return, they shared that Tommy had confessed he’d fabricated the story about Kat hitting him as retaliation for her refusal to buy him new trainers.

The parents learned that their case would not be closed right away, prompting Tommy to storm out of the room in a bad mood, stating he had no plans to make that particular phone call again.

As I listened to Alfie reassure Kat about Tommy’s feelings for her, I couldn’t help but think, “My world is about to change in ways I never could have imagined.” And with the heart-wrenching announcement of EastEnders exploring a child-to-parent abuse storyline, my fears were all too real.

EastEnders is working with Family Based Solutions, PEGS and NSPCC on this hard-hitting storyline.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
